Otorhinolaryngological disorders in a geriatric population: A study from a rural tertiary care hospital in India

Abstract: India is now an “ageing nation”. It has already entered the third stage i.e. the late expanding phase of demographic cycle. This expansion is attributed to the decreasing fertility and mortality rates due to the availability of better health care services. Health problems of geriatric people cause dependency and depression which when added to otorhinolaryngological problems, makes social interaction difficult. This study suggests that hearing loss is the most common geriatric otorhinolaryngological problem in this age group.
Possible signatures of unparticles in rare annihilation type B decays

Abstract: We investigate the effect of unparticles in the pure annihilation type decays $B^- \to D_s^-\phi $ and $ D_s^- K^{*0}$. Since these decays have only annihilation contributions their branching ratios are expected to be very small in the standard model and the direct CP asymmetry parameters to be zero. We find that due to the unparticle effect these branching ratios can be significantly enhanced from their standard model values. Furthermore, sizable nonzero direct CP violation could also be possible in these channels due to the presence of intrinsic CP conserving phase in the unparticle propagator.
$B_s^0 - \bar B_s^0$ mixing and $b \to s $ transitions in isosinglet down quark model

Abstract: The recent observation of the mass difference in $B_s$ system seems to be not in complete agreement with the corresponding standard model value. We consider the model with an extra vector like down quark to explain this discrepancy and obtain the constraints on the new physics parameters. Thereafter, we show that with these new constraints this model can successfully explain other observed deviations associated with $b \to s$ transitions, namely, $B_s \to \psi \phi$, $B\to K \pi$ and $B\to \phi K_s$.
Unparticle effect on B_s - \bar B_s mixing and its implications for B_s \to J/\psi \phi, \phi \phi decays

Abstract: We study the effect of unparticle stuff on $B_s - \bar{B}_s$ mixing and consider possible implications of it for the decaymodes $B_s \to J/\psi \phi$ and $\phi \phi$. We find that due to the new contributions from the unparticles the $B_s - \bar{B}_s$ mixing phase could be observable at the LHC along with the possible sizable CP asymmetry parameters $S_{\psi \phi(\phi \phi)}$ in $B_s \to J/\psi \phi(\phi \phi)$ decay modes.
Probing the unparticle signal in $b \to d $ penguin processes

Abstract: We investigate the effect of unparticles in the pure $ b \to d $ penguin processes $ B^0 \to K^0 \bar K^0$ and $B^{+,0} \to \phi \pi^{+,0} $. Since these processes receive dominant contributions due to the {\it top} quark in the loop, direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry parameters in these processes are expected to be vanishingly small in the standard model. We find that due to the unparticle effect sizable nonzero CP violation could be possible in these channels.
Explaining B \to K pi anomaly with non-universal Z' boson

Abstract: We study the effect of non-universal $Z'$ boson in the decay modes $B \to K \pi$. In the standard model these modes receive dominant contributions from $b \to s$ QCD penguins. Therefore, in this limit one expects $S_{\pi^0 K^0} \approx \sin 2 \beta $, $A_{\pi^0 K^0} \approx 0$ and $A_{\pi^0 K^-} \approx A_{\pi^+ K^-}$. The corrections due to the presence of small non-penguin contributions is found to yield $S_{\pi^0 K^0} > \sin 2 \beta $ and $\Delta A_{CP}(K \pi) \simeq 2.5 %$. However, the measured value of $S_{\pi^0 K^0}$ is less than $ \sin 2 \beta $ and $\Delta A_{CP}(K \pi) \simeq 15 %$. We show the model with a non-universal $Z'$ boson can successfully explain these anomalies.
Supply chain coordination for a deteriorating product under stock-dependent consumption rate and unreliable production process

Abstract: This article develops a supply chain coordination model with a single-vendor and a single-buyer. The vendor manufactures the product in lots and delivers to the buyer in equal shipments. However, the vendor’s production process is not perfectly reliable. During a production run, the process may shift from an in-control state to an out-of-control state at any random time and produces some defective items. The buyer whose demand is assumed to be linear function of the on-hand inventory performs a screening process immediately after each replenishment. Moreover, the buyer’s inventory is deteriorated at a constant rate over time. The vendor-buyer coordination policy is determined by minimizing the average cost of the supply chain. It is observed from the numerical study that channel coordination earns significant cost savings over the non-coordinated policy.

Abstract: Aims: This study was conducted to evaluate maternal characteristics and obstetric outcomes among women with hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy. Methods: A prospective hospital based study was conducted at Nepal medical college and teaching hospital over the period of two years where all the women admitted with history of hyperemesis gravidarum were evaluated. Hyperemesis gravidarum was defined as intractable nausea/vomiting in pregnancy that leads to dehydration, nutritional deficiency, electrolyte and metabolic disturbances and considerable ketonuria that may require hospitalization. The age of women, parity, gestational age, method of treatment and duration of hospital stay were analysed.The fetal outcome evaluated were incidence of preterm birth, apgar score <7 at 5 mins of birth, low birth weight, perinatal deaths and congenital anomalies in baby. Results: There were 52 women admitted with hyperemesis gravidarum among all obstetric admission (N= 2080). The incidence of hyperemesis gravidarum was 2.5% of all pregnancy. The condition was seen more commonly in nulliparous (61.5%) than in multiparous women. It was less common in women of parity 3 or more. The problem was identified maximum (50%) in gestational age of 5-7 weeks though one case was seen in gestational age of 20 weeks also. The mainstay of treatment was supportive. The range of hospital stay was 1-10 days with mean hospital stay 2.26 days. The preterm delivery rate was 4.8% and none of the babies were low birth weight. All the babies had apgar score >7 at 5 mins of birth. There were no congenital anomalies and no perinatal deaths were noted.
