Participatory evaluation and promotion of cereals and grain legumes for enhancing food security at Bajura district, Nepal

Abstract: Participatory varietal selection (PVS) trials in maize, wheat, finger millet, buckwheat, pigeon pea and field pea, mixed cropping legumes with maize were implemented and farmer-preferred varieties of those crops disseminated in Barabish VDC (900-1600 m) of Bajura district during 2007/08 to 2009/10 with a view to enhance the local level food security. Results from PVS trials showed that maize variety Deuti produced the highest mean grain yields of 3625 kg/ha which was 25% higher than the local variety, wheat variety WK-1204 was the highest yielder (3901 kg/ha), with 48% more yields than the popular and check variety RR-21. Fingermillet variety KK -1 was the highest yielder (2459 kg/ha) in midhills, whereas ACC # 2827-1, NF1703-34, and performed better in high hills. This variety showed wider adaptation both in the mid and high hills. Sweet buckwheat genotype IR-13 was most preferred by farmers. For bitter buckwheat, genotypes ACC #- 2223-1 (4813 kg/ha), Sample # 8 (2333 kg/ha) and ACC # -2227-1 (1354 kg/ha) were high yielding. Field pea variety Sikkime produced the highest fresh pod yield of 4185 kg/ha and was superior to Kalaam Local. Seed yields of medium duration pigeonpea variety Rampur Rahar-1 evaluated for the first time in the locality, ranged between 250-1500 Kg/ha. Extra short duration variety of pigeonpea suitable for growing in pigeonpea-wheat rotation in rainfed uplands has been selected by farmers. The economic benefit of intercropping groundnut with maize was higher than intercropping pigeonpea or soybean, due to higher selling price of groundnut. On-farm seed saving and seed procurement of selected varieties had been initiated to ensure adequate seed supply at the local level. More than 1829 kg seed of wheat variety WK-1204 was produced and 40 % of it was used as seed in 2010 winter season. A total of 328 farmers comprising 28% females and 72% males were benefited through participation in crop and seed production trainings organized at the villages. Role of methyleprednisolone succinate in the management of acute spinal cord injury

Abstract: Objective: To see the role of methyleprednisolone succinate in the management of acute spinal cord injury. Methods: A randomized control trial was done including the patients with acute spinal cord injury. They were divided into age and gender matched two groups. Patients with presence of active infection, associated open fracture, those on long term steroid and those who did not give consent to participate in the trial were excluded. One group received methyleprednisolone succinate within 8 hours of injury and another group did not receive the drug. Both the groups were managed nonoperatively. The neurological status of the patients was assessed at presentation, once spinal shock was over, at 6th week and 6th month and after one year according to ASIA scoring. Frankel grading was also assessed in every follow up. Conclusion: Methylprednisolone succinct prevents secondary cord injury to a great extent and hence its administration within 8 hours of injury results in a better functional (motor and sensory) outcome. Abstract: We construct and investigate non conformal anisotropic Bianchi type VII0 solutions in 5 dimensions. The solutions are asymptotically flat with a singularity. We also construct anisotropic solutions of Einstein-Maxwell gravity using a procedure similar to Majumdar-Papapetrou solutions with various profiles of charged dust and explore ways to hide the singularity behind the horizon. We further embed it in one higher dimension to get an asymptotically anti de Sitter space and approximate two point correlator of operators with higher conformal dimensions by calculating geodesic lengths. We find a peculiar power law decay of the correlator as a function of separation.
Septate gallbladder: Gross and histological perspectives in an uncommon occurrence

Abstract: Septate gallbladders are rare variations associated with the extra-hepatic biliary system. Available reports state that variations of gallbladder are either asymptomatic or are found associated with inflammation and stones. The present report is a morphological and histological study of a septate gallbladder. The organ was found to have a transversely oriented septa at about its middle that divided the cavity into an upper and a lower segment with a tiny communication between them. Both the cavities were grossly distended and filled with moderately large stones. The gallbladder presented a fibrous constriction on its exterior corresponding to the margin of the septa. The cystic duct and artery were single and normal. Histology revealed extensive intramural fibrosis and atrophy of smooth muscles. Epithelium demonstrated extreme thinning with loss of folds and glands, with presence of cysts and sinuses beneath. None of the anomalies could be suggested by pre-operative ultrasound imaging except the calculi.

Abstract: Some times ago, a Lagrangian density has been proposed by the author where only the local symmetries of the Lorentz subgroup of (A)ds group is retained. This formalism has been found to produce some results encompassing that of standard Einstein-Hilbert formalism. In the present article, the conserved axial vector matter currents, constructed in some earlier paper, have been found to be a result of Noether's theorem.

Abstract: The role of torsion and a scalar field $\phi$ in gravitation, especially, in the presence of a Dirac field in the background of a particular class of the Riemann-Cartan geometry is considered here. Recently, a Lagrangian density with Lagrange multipliers has been proposed by the author which has been obtained by picking some particular terms from the SO(4,1) Pontryagin density, where the scalar field $\phi$ causes the de Sitter connection to have the proper dimension of a gauge field. In this formalism, conserved axial vector matter current can be constructed, irrespective of any gauge choice, in any manifold having arbitrary background geometry. This current is not a Noether current.

Abstract: Riemann-Cartan space time $U_{4}$ is considered here. It has been shown that when we link topological Nieh-Yan density with the gravitational constant then we get Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian as a consequence.

It is shown here that when $\theta$-term appears cosmological $\lambda$-term also appears simultaneously.
