Two interesting cases of left atrial myxoma
VM Alurkar,S Neupane
Kathmandu University Medical Journal , 2010, DOI: 10.3126/kumj.v8i1.3226
Abstract: Atrial myxoma is the most common type of benign primary heart tumours. Most of these tumours are sporadic in origin occurring at 3rd to 6th decade of life, while hereditary forms do exist. They are mostly found in the left atrium followed by right atrium and ventricles. A left atrial myxoma may present with features of mitral valve obstruction, embolic phenomenon or systemic disease. On diagnosis, prompt surgical removal is necessary which usually gives a complete cure, though recurrences have been reported. We hereby present two cases of solitary left atrial myxoma. Key words : atrial myxoma; echocardiography; tumour impaction DOI: 10.3126/kumj.v8i1.3226 Kathmandu University Medical Journal (2010), Vol. 8, No. 1, Issue 29, 80-92

Wear Resistance and Indentation Behavior of Equiatomic Superelastic TiNi and 60NiTi  [PDF]

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2015.67071
Abstract: Indentation and reciprocating wear tests are carried out to study dent and wear resistance of superelastic Ti-Ni alloys. The effect of loading rate on the superelastic behavior of TiNi under indentation loading is investigated and compared to a new generation of shape memory alloys, i.e., 60NiTi. Only limited amount of work has been done to investigate the dependency of superelasticity on loading rate of TiNi under localized compressive loads, but much work is directed towards understanding the effect of strain rate on tensile properties. Understanding the superelastic behavior helps to employ superelastic alloys in applications where high impact loading is expected as in bearings and gears. In the present study, it is found that dent resistance of Ti-Ni alloy is not significantly affected by loading rate (within the employed loading conditions). It has also been found that new-generation 60NiTi alloy exhibits superior wear and dent resistance, as well as higher hardness compared to equiatomic TiNi.

Scenario Of Solid Waste Management In Hetauda Municipality, Nepal
Bigyan Neupane,Shuvee Neupane
International Journal of Environment , 2013, DOI: 10.3126/ije.v2i1.9214
Abstract: The paper aims to enlighten the solid waste management of Hetauda Municipality in Makwanpur district of an area of 44.5 sq. km. The total human population of the municipality is 84,671 (CBS 2011). Out of 11 wards, 5 wards (1, 2, 3, 4 and 10) were selected for the present study. In total 50 households, 10 institutions and 10 commercial sectors were selected from studied wards from which samples of different types of wastes were collected, segregated and weighed. Weight was calculated using a digital spring balance and a bag 0.043 m3 was used for the estimation of volume. Organic wastes were found to be dominant in the household (51.73%) and commercial sectors (61.70%) whereas in institutions, plastic (50.36%) and papers (38.19%) were prevailing. The findings revealed that per capita 155.4 gm/person/day household waste was generated in Hetauda Municipality. The residents are also aware of the harmful effects of the wastes, and demand an effective solid waste management services. Though they are aware about the sustainable management of wastes, due to erratic collection of wastes, some of them throw the wastes in the open lands - The local people also participate in the awareness campaigns organized by local NGOs and municipal. Solid waste management strategies are timely need for an effective management of anthropogenic wastes. Regular waste collection, improvement of dumping sites and sufficient number of composting plants are recommended in the municipality.
Effect of Antituberculosis Treatment on Serum Zinc Level in Tuberculosis

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a major public health problem worldwide. One third population of world is infected with M. tuberculosis. Zinc is micro-mineral essential for human growth, development and immune function. Deficiency of this micronutrient impairs overall immune function and resistance to infection. Present study was conducted to evaluate the level of serum zinc in patients with tuberculosis at various period of treatment. ?

Abstract: Background ?The use of abortion services at the Maternity Hospital clinic, the largest public sector abortion clinic in Nepal, has risen over the years. Whether the profile of the clients, reasons for abortion, and contraceptive use have changed are not known and need to be investigated. Objectives This paper evaluates changes between 2005 and 2010 in the socio-demographic profile of abortion users, reasons for seeking abortion, and contraceptive use of two cohorts of women who had first-trimester abortion at the Maternity Hospital. Methods We used data from two similar surveys conducted in 2005 and 2010 among 672 and 392 women, respectively, who obtained first-trimester surgical abortion in a large public sector clinic. We analyzed trend data in service utilization and carried out a cost analysis. ? Results The number of women having abortions has steadily increased over the years, and cumulatively about 19,800 women have received services. The profile of the clients at this clinic has remained essentially the same between 2005 and 2010. The typical users of abortion services at the clinic were 27 years old with two living children, mostly married, with the majority not wanting to have more children. About half of them used a contraceptive method—mostly condoms, withdrawal, the pill and rhythm—in the month of unintended pregnancy, suggesting failures with these methods. Health concerns, dislike of available methods, and perceived low risk of pregnancy were common reasons for not using a contraceptive method. Conclusion Despite increases in the number of clients, the socio-demographic profile of the abortion clients has remained similar over the years. The linkage between the abortion and family planning clinics needs to be strengthened. An ultrasonographic evaluation of solitary muscular and soft tissue cysticercosis
P Sharma,S Neupane,M Shrestha,R Dwivedi,K Paudel
Kathmandu University Medical Journal , 2010, DOI: 10.3126/kumj.v8i2.3571
Abstract: Background: Cysticercosis in humans is infection with the larval form (cysticercus cellulosae) of the pork tapeworm T. solium. Encystment of larvae can occur in almost any tissue. The location of cysts in order of frequency is the central nervous system, subcutaneous tissue and striated muscle, vitreous humour of the eye and, rarely, other tissues. High resolution ultrasound can be used in the diagnosis of muscular and soft tissue cysticercosis.
No ghost state of Gauss-Bonnet interaction in warped backgrounds

Abstract: A general solution to the Einstein field equations with Gauss-Bonnet(GB) term in the $AdS_5$ bulk background implies that the GB coupling $\alpha$ can take either sign (+ or -), though a positive $\alpha$ will be more meaningful. By considering linearized gravity with the GB term in the Randall-Sundrum(RS) a singular 3-brane model, we study the gravitational interactions between matter sources localized on the brane. With a correctly defined boundary condition on the brane, we find a smooth behavior of graviton propagator and hence the zero-mode solution as a 4d massless graviton localized on the brane with correct momentum and tensor structures. The coupling $\alpha$ modifies the graviton propagators both on the brane and in the bulk. The issue on ghost state of the GB term is resolved, and we find that there is no real ghost (negative norm) state of the GB term in the RS single brane picture. The latter condition leads to a consistency in the coupling between the brane matter and the bulk gravity. We also elucidate about the possibilities for behavior of a test particle on the brane and in the bulk.
