Checklist of free living nematodes recorded from freshwater habitats in Southern Africa
J Heyns
Water SA , 2002,
Abstract: A checklist is given of about 150 species of aquatic and semi-aquatic free living nematodes recorded from freshwater as well as from mud and wet soil adjoining water bodies, from South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. WaterSA Vol.28(4) 2002: 449-456
Acrobeles farzanae spec. nov. and Seleborca complexa (Thorne) from the West Coast National Park and Rocher Pan Nature Reserve (Nematoda: ephalobidae)
J. Heyns
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 1995, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v38i2.318
Abstract: Acrobeles fananae spec. nov. is described from two localities on the west coast of South Africa. The new species is characterised by body length of 0.7-0.8 mm; relatively slender, cylindroid body, abruptly ventrally bent in vulval region; vulva with protruding lips and situated in a sunken area; three incisures in lateral field; and cuticle with an intricate interlocked block-like pattern. Additional data is presented on the morphology of Seleborca complexa (Thorne, 1925) collected in the same area.
Description of Longidoroides wiesae spec. nov. from the Kruger National Park (Nematoda: Dorylaimida)
J. Heyns
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 1994, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v37i2.340
Abstract: Longidoroides wiesae spec. nov. is described from South Africa. The new species is characterised by body length of about 4,5 mm; a spiral body posture; bluntly rounded, confluent lip region; small slit-like amphid aperture; bilobed amphidial fovea; bluntly rounded tail; and stylet length about 172 pm. It is compared with L. costatus Jacobs & Heyns, 1987, L. pulcher Jacobs & Heyns, 1982, L. pint Jacobs & Heyns, 1987 and an unnamed Longidoroides species described from Brazil by Rashid, Coomans & Sharma (1986).
The genus Discolaimus in southern Africa. 2. Discolaimus constrictus sp. n. and D. monoplanus Heyns, 1963 (Nematoda: Dorylaimida)
J. Heyns
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 2001, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v44i2.173
Abstract: Discolaimus constrictus sp.n. is differentiated from D. mucurubanus Loof, 1964, the only other species in the genus in which the basal bulb is set off by a constriction, by its larger size, relatively shorter oesophagus, relatively shorter tail and more posteriorly situated vulva. In general appearance it more closely resembles D. affinis Loof, 1964, D. similis Thorne, 1939 and D. silvicolus Sauer & Annels, 1985. A large population of D. monoplanus Heyns, 1963 is described from Namibia. The remarkable similarity between D. monoplanus, D. texanus Cobb, 1913 and D. brevis Siddiqi, 1964 is pointed out, and the biometrics of all recorded populations of these three species are tabulated and briefly discussed.
The genus Discolaimus in Southern Africa. I. Introduction and redescription ofD. krugeri Furstenberg & Heyns, 1966 (Nematoda: Dorylaimida)
J. HEYNS
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 2000, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v43i2.195
Abstract: A survey of the literature leads to the conclusion that males are rare or absent in about half of the known species of Discolaimus and probably seldom functional, except in two species where spermathecae are present in the female reproductive system, viz. D. krugeri and D. levinae. The structure of the female gonads and the location of the oesophageal gland nuclei are discussed. A redescription of D. krugeri is given, based on material from several localities in South Africa as well as a single male from Namibia.
The genus Xiphinema in South Africa. XXVI. New information on
J. Heyns
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 2001, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v44i2.174
Abstract: A population of Xiphinema bolandium from the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area in the Eastern Cape Province was studied, and the four juvenile stages described and figured for the first time. New distribution records are listed from several localities in the Western Cape Province, mostly from vineyards and peach orchards, as well as from fynbos.
New records of Tyienchida, Araeolaimida and Enoplida from the Kruger National Park, with an addendum to the check list of nematode species in the park
Annelize Botha,J. Heyns
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 1993, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v36i1.362
Abstract: New distribution records are given for Hemicycliophora lahiata Colbran, 1960, Helicotlenclms africanus (Micoletzky, 1916), Scutellonema hrachyurum (Steiner, 1938), Plectus cirratus Bastian, 1865 and Ironus i^navus Bastian 1865. A check list of all the nematode species recorded from rivers in the Kruger National Park is included.
Species of Tyieptus, Proleptonchus, Aquatides and Afractinolaimus from rivers in the Kruger National Park (Nematoda: Dorylaimida)
Annelize Botha,J. Heyns
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 1992, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v35i1.388
Abstract: Descriptions are given of Proleptonchus krugeri spec. nov., Afractinolaimus zairensis (Baqri, Coomans & van der Heiden, 1975) and Aquatides thornei fSchneider, 1937), recorded here for the first time from South Africa. New distribution records are given for Tyieptus striatus Heyns, 1963. Additional information is given and morphometric data are tabulated, and where appropriate, illustrations are also given.
Freshwater nematodes of the genera Thornenema and Mesodorylaimus from the Kruger National Park with a diagnostic species compendium for South African species of the genus Mesodorylaimus (Nematoda: Dorylaimida)
Annelize Botha,J Heyns
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 1992, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v35i1.387
Abstract: Complete descriptions are given of Mesodorylaimus potus Heyns, 1963, a new record for the Kruger National Park and M. aegypticus (Andrassy, 1958) recorded here for the first time from South Africa. Additional information and new distribution records are given for Mesodorylaimus sp. cf paralitoralis (Basson & Heyns, 1974) and Thornenema haldum (Thome, 1939). A compendium is also presented for the 17 recognized Mesodorylaimus species from South Africa.
