Arvejas (Pisum sativum) de Vaina Comestible Sugar Snap: Antecedentes y Comportamiento en el Sur de Chile Edible-Podded Sugar Snap Peas (Pisum sativum): Description and Behavior in Southern Chile

Abstract: Las arvejas (Pisum sativum L.) “sugar snap” son el resultado de la combinación de al menos seis genes recesivos que controlan características de la vaina y el grano, y otros dos genes se están sumando en variedades modernas. Es un tipo de vaina comestible que, a diferencia de las “sinhilas”, tiene vainas de paredes engrosadas. Pueden consumirse en estado fresco o congelado y han tenido gran aceptación en Norteamérica y otros países. Seis genotipos provenientes de los Estados Unidos fueron evaluados en dos localidades de la Región de La Araucanía, Chile, durante 2004 y 2005. La mayoría de las variedades “sugar snap” dieron rendimientos similares a un cultivar para congelado utilizado como testigo. Las diferencias de rendimiento entre las variedades “sugar snap” fueron peque as y no consistentes, sin embargo, la variedad Sweet Ann se comportó relativamente bien y mostró la mejor aptitud para congelado. Se obtuvieron rendimientos superiores a 15 t ha-1 de vaina bajo condiciones ambientales favorables, sugiriendo que es posible obtener 10 t ha-1 de vaina en producciones comerciales. Las vainas de las variedades evaluadas presentaron, en magnitud variable, haces de fibra en las suturas dorsal y ventral, que deben ser retirados antes del consumo. Muon Tomography of Ice-filled Cleft Systems in Steep Bedrock Permafrost: A Proposal

Abstract: In this note, we propose a novel application of geoparticle physics, namely using a muon tomograph to study ice-filled cleft systems in steep bedrock permafrost. This research could significantly improve our understanding of high alpine permafrost in general and climate-permafrost induced rockfall in particular.
Noncommutative Extended Waves and Soliton-like Configurations in N=2 String Theory

Abstract: The Seiberg-Witten limit of fermionic N=2 string theory with nonvanishing B-field is governed by noncommutative self-dual Yang-Mills theory (ncSDYM) in 2+2 dimensions. Conversely, the self-duality equations are contained in the equation of motion of N=2 string field theory in a B-field background. Therefore finding solutions to noncommutative self-dual Yang-Mills theory on R^{2,2} might help to improve our understanding of nonperturbative properties of string (field) theory. In this paper, we construct nonlinear soliton-like and multi-plane wave solutions of the ncSDYM equations corresponding to certain D-brane configurations by employing a solution generating technique, an extension of the so-called dressing approach. The underlying Lax pair is discussed in two different gauges, the unitary and the hermitean gauge. Several examples and applications for both situations are considered, including abelian solutions constructed from GMS-like projectors, noncommutative U(2) soliton-like configurations and interacting plane waves. We display a correspondence to earlier work on string field theory and argue that the solutions found here can serve as a guideline in the search for nonperturbative solutions of nonpolynomial string field theory.
Alleviating neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia: the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761?. Findings from a randomized controlled trial

Total scores on the SKT cognitive test battery (Erzigkeit’s short syndrome test) were between 9 and 23. After random allocation, the patients took 240 mg of EGb 761 or placebo once daily for a period of 24 weeks. Changes from baseline to week 24 in the NPI composite and in the SKT total score were the primary outcomes. The NPI distress score was chosen as a secondary outcome measure to evaluate caregivers’ distress.Results: The NPI composite score improved by -3.2 (95% confidence interval -4.0 to -2.3) in patients taking EGb 761 (n = 202), but did not change (-0.9; 0.9) in those receiving placebo (n = 202), which resulted in a statistically significant difference in favor of EGb 761 (P < 0.001). Treatment with EGb 761 was significantly superior to placebo for the symptoms apathy/indifference, sleep/night-time behavior, irritability/lability, depression/dysphoria, and aberrant motor behavior. Caregivers’ distress evaluation revealed similar baseline pattern and improvements.Conclusion: Treatment with EGb 761 , at a once-daily dose of 240 mg, was safe, effectively alleviated behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with mild to moderate dementia, and improved the wellbeing of their caregivers.Keywords: Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, patients, caregivers, Ginkgo biloba, EGb 761
Fuzzy Scalar Field Theory as Matrix Quantum Mechanics

Abstract: We study the phase diagram of scalar field theory on a three dimensional Euclidean spacetime whose spatial component is a fuzzy sphere. The corresponding model is an ordinary one-dimensional matrix model deformed by terms involving fixed external matrices. These terms can be approximated by multitrace expressions using a group theoretical method developed recently. The resulting matrix model is accessible to the standard techniques of matrix quantum mechanics.
Review of Alzheimer's disease scales: is there a need for a new multi-domain scale for therapy evaluation in medical practice?

Abstract: The National Library of Medicines' MEDLINE database was searched for the years 1981 to September 2008, using a set of keywords aiming to select instruments which cover at least some of the requirements for an ideal practical AD scale for therapy evaluation. Measures for AD staging and screening tests were not considered for review.Of 1,902 articles resulting from the literature search, 68 relevant AD scales were identified. Most of them were scales that predominantly measure the severity of major dysfunctions in particular AD domains. Only five scales met some of the requirements for a practical multi-domain AD scale, but did not possess all required characteristics.Despite the multitude of AD scales for various purposes, there remains a need for a new multi-domain and easy to administer AD scale for assessment of disease progression and response to therapy in daily medical practice.Alzheimer's disease (AD), together with other forms of dementia, represents a major challenge for health care systems with aging populations. AD is associated with neurodegenerative changes which compromise not only cognitive functioning but also lead to a decline in functional abilities and induce a spectrum of psychological or behavioral symptoms [1]. Many efforts are currently undertaken to investigate AD pathology and develop appropriate treatment strategies. These strategies focus on long-term preservation of cognitive and functional abilities or slowing down disease progression along with reducing behavioral symptoms and maintaining the patient's quality of life [2,3]. As long as there is no treatment leading to reversal or stopping of disease progression, an amelioration of the disease symptoms, which may delay institutionalization, as well as a reduction of caregiver burden and costs, are realistic treatment goals today.Rating scales are essential tools for AD diagnosis, staging, assessment and careful monitoring of AD symptoms as well as for evaluation of treatment effects. Abstract: Parity is ubiquitous, but not always identified as a simplifying tool for computations. Using parity, having in mind the example of the bosonic/fermionic Fock space, and the framework of Z_2-graded (super) algebra, we clarify relationships between the different definitions of supermanifolds proposed by various people. In addition, we work with four complexes allowing an invariant definition of divergence: - an ascending complex of forms, and a descending complex of densities on real variables - an ascending complex of forms, and descending complex of densities on Grass mann variables. This study is a step towards an invariant definition of integrals of superfunctions defined on supermanifolds leading to an extension to infinite dimensions. An application is given to a construction of supersymmetric Fock spaces.
