Abstract: effect of blanching and hygroscopic coating on quality of fresh-cut carrots (daucus carota var. chantenay) during storage. the effect of blanching at low temperatures (solution 1% acid citric, 50°c for 30 seconds) and the application of glycerol as humectant (3% p/p, 20 seconds) to preserve the quality of fresh-cut carrots (daucus carota) were studied as individual or combined treatments. four treatments were evaluated: a control by dipping samples for 30 seconds in distilled water (t1); blanching (t2); glycerol application (t3); and blanching plus glycerol application (t4). total carotenoids content, color, soluble solids and weight loss were monitored during storage. results showed no differences between treatments in carotenoids content (p>0,10) and soluble solids (p>0,05). however, differences were observed between treatments in weight loss (p<0,05) and color change (p<0,05). blanched samples (t2 and t4) showed small changes in orange color intensity compared to treatments t1 and t3 (p<0,05).

Abstract: Waterleaf (Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) Willd has long been eaten in Indonesia as vegetable and the main parts consumed are leaves and young shoots. Waterleaf is sticky presumably due to its pectin content which is associated to dietary fiber. The dietary fiber which was analyzed in the present study was influenced by cultivation practices. The aim of this research was to study the effect of organic and conventional fertilization as well as the seasonal changes to the level of TDF (total dietary fiber), IDF (insoluble dietary fiber), SDF (soluble dietary fiber), and pectic substances in waterleaf. This research was conducted in four phases: sample cultivation, sample preparation, chemical analysis, and data analysis. This research used five samples cultivated with 5 different compositions of organic fertilizers and vice versa for conventional fertilizers. The cultivation was done in the experimental field of University Farm, Bogor, Indonesia during rainy season and dry season. Samples were harvested 8 weeks after planted, dried using drying oven for 17 hours at 60°C, ground and filtered to 40 mesh; and kept at -10°C until analysis. The overall result showed that the conventional samples contain higher dietary fiber than the organically fertilized samples, except the pectic substances of plant in dry season. Although its IDF content is higher than the SDF, the SDF content of waterleaf is relatively high compared to other vegetables, especially in dry season.
An Alternative Use of Horticultural Crops: Stressed Plants as Biofactories of Bioactive Phenolic Compounds

Abstract: Plants subjected to abiotic stresses synthesize secondary metabolites with potential application in the functional foods, dietary supplements, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and agrochemical markets. This approach can be extended to horticultural crops. This review describes previous reports regarding the effect of different postharvest abiotic stresses on the accumulation of phenolic compounds. Likewise, the physiological basis for the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds as an abiotic stress response is described. The information presented herein would be useful for growers and the fresh produce market which are interested in finding alternative uses for their crops, especially for those not meeting quality standards and thus are considered as waste.

Abstract: edible coating effects on the sensory quality of green bell pepper fruits (capsicum annuum l.) during storage. edible coating based on carboxymethyl cellulose (cmc) and stearic acid were applied on green bell peppers (capsicum annuum l.) samples in order to investigate its effects as protecting agent to enhance natural characteristics of products. samples were submited to three lots according to: (t1) uncoated; (t2) coated in lower part of the stem; (t3) coated all over the surface (t3). during storage at 5 ± 1oc, for 28 days, sensory quality and weight loss were evaluated. sensory characteristics such as color, appearance and firmness were controlled using a composite scoring test. at the end of the study, t3 treatment showed better sensory stability than t1 (p<0.05), none significant changes between t2 and t3 were found. the coated samples showed less firmness deterioration compaired with control samples. the color was the attribute that changed less, without significant difference between treatments (p>0.05)

Our mistake was basically in the calculations of changes observed in the reported values in those references; unfortunately we did not detect the errors at the time of publication. A Three-Component Gene Expression System and Its Application for Inducible Flavonoid Overproduction in Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: Inducible gene expression is a powerful tool to study and engineer genes whose overexpression could be detrimental for the host organisms. However, only limited systems have been adopted in plant biotechnology. We have developed an osmotically inducible system using three components of plant origin, RD29a (Responsive to Dehydration 29A) promoter, CBF3 (C-repeat Binding Factor 3) transcription factor and cpl1-2 (CTD phosphatase-like 1) mutation. The osmotic stress responsible RD29a promoter contains the CBF3 binding sites and thus RD29A-CBF3 feedforward cassette enhances induction of RD29a promoter under stress. The cpl1-2 mutation in a host repressor CPL1 promotes stress responsible RD29a promoter expression. The efficacy of this system was tested using PAP1 (Production of Anthocyanin Pigment 1) transgene, a model transcription factor that regulates the anthocyanin pathway in Arabidopsis. While transgenic plants with only one or two of three components did not reproducibly accumulate anthocyanin pigments above the control level, transgenic cpl1 plants containing homozygous RD29a-PAP1 and RD29a-CBF3 transgenes produced 30-fold higher level of total anthocyanins than control plants upon cold treatment. Growth retardation and phytochemical production of transgenic plants were minimum under normal conditions. The flavonoid profile in cold-induced transgenic plants was determined by LC/MS/MS, which resembled that of previously reported pap1-D plants but enriched for kaempferol derivatives. These results establish the functionality of the inducible three-component gene expression system in plant metabolic engineering. Furthermore, we show that PAP1 and environmental signals synergistically regulate the flavonoid pathway to produce a unique flavonoid blend that has not been produced by PAP1 overexpression or cold treatment alone.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the fruit quality of seven genotypes native tomato (lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme): jcprv-05, jcpvr-09, jcprv-10, jcprv-43, jcprv-70, jcprv-71, and jcprv-76 were grown in hydroponics without recirculation and under greenhouse. a commercial cherry tomato hybrid was used as a control (h-790). firmness, days at 7% of weight loss (dwl)), ph, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, lycopene, β-carotene and ascorbic acid content were evaluated. there were significant differences in all variables, except ph, which ranged from 4.1 to 4.4. in firmness, h-790 exceeded by 19.5% to the native genotype which showed the highest penetration resistance (jcprv-05). in dwl, h-790 exceeded by 20.6% to jcprv-10 which presented the greatest period of native genotypes. in total soluble solids, jcprv-05 exceeded by 10% to h-790. in acidity, jcprv-43 exceeded by 23% to h-790. in regard to the lycopene content, jcprv-09 was 6.1% higher than h-790. in β-carotene content, jcprv-76 exceeded by 4.0% to h-790; jcprv-76 exceeded by 35.4% to h-790 in ascorbic acid content. except for firmness, ph and dpp fruit, most native evaluated genotypes exceeded to commercial hybrid (h-790) for all parameters. it was considered that these materials could be used as a source of germplasm in breeding programs of tomato in order to increase the internal quality of fruits of this specie.

Abstract: Un modelo de optimización se construye para seleccionar las relaciones de reducción óptima que minimicen el contragolpe angular total en un tren de engranajes, con limitaciones en relación de reducción total y espacio disponible. Se ha encontrado que un dise o adecuado de relaciones de reducción tiene un efecto importante en el contragolpe angular total de un tren de engranajes.
