Abstract: entomopathogenic fungi are an attractive alternative for the biological control of insects. in chile, the quilamapu regional research center of the national agricultural research institute (inia) has collected about 400 isolates of the genus beauveria along the country. a partial classification of this collection has been based on morphology and efficiency as biological control agents. it is necessary to complement this characterization with genetic molecular markers, to determine the level of genetic diversity in chilean beauveria bassiana populations and to identify banding patterns that discriminate among isolates from a representative sample of the b. bassiana collection. the analysis was done using random amplified polymorphic dna (rapd) and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (pcr-rflp) of internal transcribed spacer (its)-rdna sequences. the rapd analysis indicated high genetic diversity among the isolates, with a 43% of similarity on the average. rapd were more efficient at identifying isolates. on the other hand, the its analysis determined a lower diversity, with an 83% of similarity among the isolates. the low number of haplotypes did not allow discrimination among isolates. its 1 region showed a higher number of restriction sites, compared to its 2 region. for the two molecular markers, genetic diversity was not associated with the geographical origin of the isolates.

Abstract: Los hongos entomopatógenos son una alternativa atractiva para el control biológico de insectos plagas. En Chile, el Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA), Centro Regional de Investigación Quilamapu mantiene aproximadamente 400 aislamientos de Beauveria, colectados a través del país. Esta colección ha sido parcialmente clasificada en base a su morfología y a su eficacia como controlador biológico. Sin embargo, es necesario complementar estos estudios con una caracterización a nivel genético-molecular, para determinar el nivel de diversidad genética de Beauveria bassiana e identificar posibles patrones de bandas que permitan dicriminar entre aislamientos. En este estudio, se analizaron 36 aislamientos de B. bassiana provenientes de diversas regiones geográficas del país. El análisis genético se realizó mediante el ADN Polimórfico Amplificado al Azar (RAPD) y la Reacción en Cadena de la Polimerasa-Fragmentos de Restricción Polimórficos (PCR-RFLP) de los espaciadores internos transcritos (ITS) de las secuencias ribosomales del ADN (ITS-rDNA). El análisis de RAPD indicó una alta diversidad genética entre los aislamientos, con un promedio de 43% de similitud. Por otro lado, el análisis de los ITS determinó una menor diversidad, con un 83% de similitud entre aislamientos. La región ITS 1 mostró un mayor número de sitios de restricción que la región ITS 2. Los RAPD fueron más eficientes para discriminar (o identificar) entre cepas debido al bajo número de haplotipos detectados con los ITS. Para los dos marcadores utilizados en este estudio, la diversidad genética no estuvo asociada con el origen geográfico de los aislamientos. Abstract: We consider the problem of a sphere rolling of a curved surface and solve it by mapping it to the precession of a spin 1/2 in a magnetic field of variable magnitude and direction. The mapping can be of pedagogical use in discussing both rolling and spin precession, and in particular in understanding the emergence of geometrical phases in classical problems.

Abstract: In this paper we consider the classical and quantum control of squeezed states of harmonic oscillators. This provides a method for reducing noise below the quantum limit and provides an example of the control of under-actuated systems in the stochastic and quantum context. Abstract: Experiments of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) were performed on Co$% ^{2+}$ substituting Zn$^{2+}$ or Mg$^{2+}$ in powder samples of Zn$_2$(OH)PO$_4$ and Mg$_2$(OH)AsO$_4$. The observed resonances are described with a theoretical model that considers the departures from the two perfect structures. It is shown that the resonance in the penta-coordinated complex is allowed, and the crystal fields that would describe the resonance of the Co$^{2+}$ in the two environments are calculated. The small intensity of the resonance in the penta-coordinated complex is explained assuming that this site is much less populated than the octahedral one; this assumption was verified by a molecular calculation of the energies of the two environments, with both Co and Zn as central ions in Zn$_2$(OH)PO$_4$.
Hydric properties of some iberian ornamental granites with different superficial finishes: a petrophysical interpretation

Abstract: Some physical properties of three ornamental granites with different superficial finishes (polished, sawn and flamed) were quantified by standard tests. These granites are commercially known as Rosa Porrino, Rosavel and Blanco Alcazar. The determined properties were: density, open porosity, water absorption, capillarity, evaporation, vapour absorption and water vapour permeability. The values of the hydric properties in the studied granites fundamentally depended on their textural characteristics, mainly grain size, micro cracking network and open porosity, and, to a lesser extent, on their superficial finish. El estudio analiza las diferencias en el comportamiento hídrico de tres granitos con diferentes acabados superficiales: pulido, corte de sierra y chorro de fuego. Estos granitos se comercializan con los nombres de Rosa Porrino, Rosavel y Blanco Alcázar. Las propiedades determinadas han sido: densidad, porosidad abierta, absorción libre de agua, absorción de vapor de agua, absorción de agua por capilaridad, evaporación y permeabilidad al vapor de agua. Los valores de las propiedades hídricas determinadas dependen fundamentalmente de las características texturales: tama o de grano, microfisuras y porosidad abierta y, en menor medida, de los acabados superficiales.
Herramientas para evaluar la sostenibilidad de las intervenciones urbanas en barrios

Abstract: Integrating assessment tools in the decision making process of urban design may contribute to tackle the defining challenges of sustainability that our cities face. The research works on practical tools to compare alternatives taking into account sustainability criteria that incorporate quantitative as well as qualitative assessment. Effective assessment tools that take into account socioeconomic criteria are required to push forward integrated urban planning policies that can shape interventions at neighbourhood scale. This paper presents the conclusions after the review of assessment tools available in the European context. These tools are focussed mainly on delivering reports and guidelines, list of indicators and best practices; besides those reports, also some methodologies and specific technologies have been developed. Nevertheless there is a lack of practical, useful and open source tools to assess urban sustainability of urban small scale interventions. El empleo en la planificación y en el dise o de intervenciones de mejora urbana, de herramientas que permitan comparar alternativas con criterios de sostenibilidad, contribuiría a afrontar algunos de los retos fundamentales a los que se enfrentan nuestras ciudades. Desde la Unión Europea se aboga por políticas urbanas integrales. Para lograrlas sería recomendable contar con herramientas de evaluación adecuadas, que incorporen los aspectos socioeconómicos y se puedan aplicar en la escala de barrio. El artículo presenta las conclusiones de la revisión de herramientas para evaluar la sostenibilidad urbana en el contexto europeo. Estas herramientas aportan sobre todo informes, guías, indicadores y buenas prácticas. En algún caso se han desarrollado metodologías y tecnologías específicas. A pesar de la gran cantidad de recursos públicos invertidos, sigue habiendo una carencia de herramientas prácticas, útiles y de código abierto que permitan evaluar la sostenibilidad de las intervenciones en barrios de la ciudad construida.
Anomalous Dimension and Spatial Correlations in a Point-Island Model

Abstract: We examine the island size distribution function and spatial correlation function of a model for island growth in the submonolayer regime in both 1 and 2 dimensions. In our model the islands do not grow in shape, and a fixed number of adatoms are added, nucleate, and are trapped at islands as they diffuse. We study the cases of various critical island sizes $i$ for nucleation as a function of initial coverage. We found anomalous scaling of the island size distribution for large $i$ . Using scaling, random walk theory, a version of mean-field theory we obtain a closed form for the spatial correlation function. Our analytic results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.
Study of Planetary Systems around Giant Stars

Abstract: More than 450 exoplanets have currently been detected, most of them by the radial velocity (RV) technique. While the majority of exoplanets have been found around main-sequence (MS) FGK stars (M 1.5M*), only a small fraction (- 10%) have been discovered orbiting post- MS stars. However, such stars are known to host exoplanets and the detection fraction appears to be larger than for solar-type dwarfs. To date - 30 planets have been found orbiting giant stars which have revealed interesting properties that contrast with the results found for solar-type stars. We are carrying out a RV search for planets around giant stars in the southern hemisphere in order to study different formation scenarios for planets around intermediate-mass stars and the effect of the post-MS evolution of the host stars on the orbits of close-in planets (a 0.6 AU).
CE-315 : A New Interacting Double-degenerate Binary Star

Abstract: We present spectroscopic observations of object CE-315 revealing a blue continuum with strong emission lines. Most of the detected lines are identified with He I or He II in emission with a handful of faint lines of nitrogen. Notable is the complete absence of hydrogen lines. The He lines exhibit triple-peaked profiles with remakably broad widths, of about 2000 km/s (FWZP). The observations show that CE-315 is an interacting binary system with an orbital period of 65.1 +/- 0.7 minutes, and a mass ratio of 0.022. We conclude that the most likely scenario for this object is that of an accreting 0.77 solar mass white dwarf with a 0.017 solar mass helium white dwarf as mass donor.
