Biological and ecological aspects of the distribution of Sepia australis (Cephalopoda: Sepiidae) off the south coast of southern Africa

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: During the South Coast Biomass Survey in 1988, 49,4 kg (6336 individuals) of Sepia australis were caught between Cape Agulhas and Algoa Bay. A biomass index of 803 t of S. australis was calculated for the area at that time. Largest catches were taken between about 20oE and 22oE, in waters of 10 11°C and 50-150 m depth. The overall sex ratio was 2M: 3F and mean individual mass was 6,47 g for males and 8,67 g for females. The largest animals were a mature male of 58 mm mantle length and a maturing female of 65 mm mantle length. Most of the animals trawled off the South Coast were maturing or fully mature in early winter and very few immature animals were found. Differences in mean mantle length and maturity stage of the animals in different areas were found to be correlated most strongly with water temperature but also with depth and longitude. Largest numbers and mean sizes of mature animals caught suggest that the main spawning grounds off the South Coast may be in deeper water on the western side of the Agulhas Bank. To the east the deeper water is warmer and the animals there may be at a disadvantage, as optimum temperatures and depths for spawning do not coincide. *********** AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gedurende die Suidkus-Biomassa-opname in 1988 is altesaam 49,4 kg (6336 individue) Sepia australis gevang. ‘n Biomassa-indeks van 803 t S. australis is toe vir die gebied bereken. Bell's inequality violation for entangled generalized Bernoulli states in two spatially separate cavities

Abstract: We consider the entanglement of orthogonal generalized Bernoulli states in two separate single-mode high-$Q$ cavities. The expectation values and the correlations of the electric field in the cavities are obtained. We then define, in each cavity, a dichotomic operator expressible in terms of the field states which can be, in principle, experimentally measured by a probe atom that ``reads'' the field. Using the quantum correlations of couples of these operators, we construct a Bell's inequality which is shown to be violated for a wide range of the degree of entanglement and which can be tested in a simple way. Thus the cavity fields directly show quantum non-local properties. A scheme is also sketched to generate entangled orthogonal generalized Bernoulli states in the two separate cavities.
Single-Shot Generation and Detection of a Two-Photon Generalized Binomial State in a Cavity

Abstract: A "quasi-deterministic" scheme to generate a two-photon generalized binomial state in a single-mode high-Q cavity is proposed. We also suggest a single-shot scheme to measure the generated state based on a probe two-level atom that "reads" the cavity field. The possibility of implementing the schemes is discussed.
Generating and Revealing a Quantum Superposition of Electromagnetic Field Binomial States in a Cavity

Abstract: We introduce the $N$-photon quantum superposition of two orthogonal generalized binomial states of electromagnetic field. We then propose, using resonant atom-cavity interactions, non-conditional schemes to generate and reveal such a quantum superposition for the two-photon case in a single-mode high-$Q$ cavity. We finally discuss the implementation of the proposed schemes.

Abstract: We consider entangled two-photon generalized binomial states of the electromagnetic field in two separate cavities. The nonlocal properties of this entangled field state are analyzed by studying the electric field correlations between the two cavities. A Bell's inequality violation is obtained using an appropriate dichotomic cavity operator, that is in principle measurable.

Abstract: We propose a conditional scheme to generate entangled two-photons generalized binomial states inside two separate single-mode high-Q cavities. This scheme requires that the two cavities are initially prepared in entangled one-photon generalized binomial states and exploits the passage of two appropriately prepared two-level atoms one in each cavity. The measurement of the ground state of both atoms is finally required when they exit the cavities. We also give a brief evaluation of the experimental feasibility of the scheme.
Pesticide exposure: the hormonal function of the female reproductive system disrupted?

Abstract: Although a substantial amount of research has been conducted to associate occupational exposure to pesticides with fertility problems in men [1-4], studies among women are scarce. One reason may be that exposure to pesticides is higher among men, because men usually apply pesticides whereas women get exposed through re-entry activities only. Another reason may be that fertility in women is more difficult to assess than fertility in men. The ovarian cycle has not been as fully explored as the spermatogenesis in men. Ovarian disorders can be caused by a large variety of factors, such as high levels of physical activity, age, stress, smoking, and caffeine use [5-7]. In addition, exposure to chemicals such as benzene and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can affect the menstrual cycle [8,9]. There are also indications that exposure to particular pesticides may induce ovarian dysfunction. Recently, Farr et al. examined the association between pesticide exposure and menstrual cycle characteristics [10]. They observed that women who worked with pesticides suspected of being hormonally active had a 60–100% increased odds of experiencing long cycles, missed periods, and intermenstrual bleeding compared with women who had never worked with pesticides. In two studies on time-to-pregnancy among female greenhouse workers [11,12], the authors concluded that female workers in flower greenhouses may have reduced fecundability and that exposure to pesticides may be part of the causal chain. In one other study, an increased risk of infertility was observed among women exposed to pesticides or working in industries associated with agriculture [13,14].Some pesticides may interfere with the female hormonal function and thereby cause negative effects on the reproductive system. Most previous studies focused on interference with the estrogen and/or androgen receptor, but the hormonal function can be disrupted in many more ways through pesticide exposure. Abstract: This article discusses some of the most important theories about authorship and the author’s intentions developed during the last century. It argues that initially Husserl, Croce and the New Criticism firmly divided private intentions on the one side and verbal meanings (constituting an ideal subject) on the other. Then, it introduces Derrida and Barthes who suggested a radical change in perspective by confuting the existence of an ideal conscious subject, of ideal meanings and of private intentions. Subsequently, Booth and Foucault looked for a surrogate of the author and found it in a discursive instance showing the reader a path to the author’s intentions. Lastly, Anscombe and Eco formulated a new concept of public and open intention completely redefining the whole issue. This article, in conclusion, suggests that, in spite of all statements about the ‘death of the author’, it is precisely thanks to the twentieth-century debate that the author was born.

Abstract: L’infrastruttura tecnologica di SIRIO consta di apparecchiature distribuite su due sedi geograficamente distanti atte ad aumentare il livello di sicurezza per la conservazione e manutenzione dei dati. Le funzionalità sono state progettate seguendo principi consolidati e ove possibile con soluzioni innovative a tutela di una migliore integrità delle informazioni registrate nel database. Il database ORACLE, cuore di SIRIO, vanta una rappresentazione altamente normalizzata che consente di aumentare l’efficienza della definizione di nuove entità apportando leggere variazioni alla struttura originaria. The technological infrastructure of SIRIO includes devices that are distributed in two different sites geographically distant. This approach increases the security level of the preservation and managing of the data. The functionalities were designed following established principles and, where possible, with advanced solutions to protect a better integrity of the information recorded in the database. The ORACLE database, core of SIRIO, boasts a highly normalised representation, which allows one to increase the efficiency of the definition of new entities, by slightly modifying the original structures.
