Process and impact evaluation of the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy Health Impact Assessment

Abstract: using multiple qualitative methodologies including key informant interviews, focus groups and questionnaires, this study performs process and impact evaluations of the Christchurch HIA including evaluation of costs and resource use;the evaluation found that the HIA had demonstrable direct impacts on planning and implementation of the final Urban Development Strategy as well as indirect impacts on understandings and ways of working within and between organisations. It also points out future directions and ways of working in this successful collaboration between public health and local government authorities. It summarises the modest resource use and discusses the important role HIA can play in urban planning with intersectoral collaboration and enhanced relationships as both catalysts and outcomes of the HIA process;as one of the few evaluations of HIA that have been published to date, this paper makes a substantial contribution to the literature on the impact, utility and effectiveness of HIA.Health impact assessment (HIA) has been promoted for over twenty years as a way to enhance the potential effects of a policy or strategy "on the health of a population, and the distribution of those effects within the population " [1]. HIA uses a mixture of quantitative and qualitative predictive methods and community consultation to identify, and where possible quantify, a specific proposal's direct and indirect impacts on health [2]. Impact assessment has been used in New Zealand in the environmental field for many years [2-5]. More recently HIA has been promoted to assess the impacts of national and local policy on health, wellbeing and equity. The New Zealand Health Strategy includes HIA of policy under Objective One [6]. Abstract: Se comunica el hallazgo del tiburón Etmopterus unicolor (Engelhardt, 1912) (Squaliformes: Dalatiidae), capturado en octubre de 2003 como fauna acompa ante en faenas de pesca de merluza de cola Macruronus magellanicus novaezelandiae (Hector, 1871) en aguas del talud continental ubicado frente a Valdivia, Chile, a una profundidad de 400 m, mediante pesca de arrastre. Este constituye el primer registro de esta especie para la ictiofauna chilena y para el Pacífico suroriental. Abstract: According to Paul Erd\H{o}s [Some notes on Tur\'an's mathematical work, J. Approx. Theory 29 (1980), page 4] it was Paul Tur\'an who "created the area of extremal problems in graph theory". However, without a doubt, Paul Erd\H{o}s popularized extremal combinatorics, by his many contributions to the field, his numerous questions and conjectures, and his influence on discrete mathematicians in Hungary and all over the world. In fact, most of the early contributions in this field can be traced back to Paul Erd\H{o}s, Paul Tur\'an, as well as their collaborators and students. Paul Erd\H{o}s also established the probabilistic method in discrete mathematics, and in collaboration with Alfr\'ed R\'enyi, he started the systematic study of random graphs. We shall survey recent developments at the interface of extremal combinatorics and random graph theory.
Lockdown: Dynamic Control-Flow Integrity

Abstract: Applications written in low-level languages without type or memory safety are especially prone to memory corruption. Attackers gain code execution capabilities through such applications despite all currently deployed defenses by exploiting memory corruption vulnerabilities. Control-Flow Integrity (CFI) is a promising defense mechanism that restricts open control-flow transfers to a static set of well-known locations. We present Lockdown, an approach to dynamic CFI that protects legacy, binary-only executables and libraries. Lockdown adaptively learns the control-flow graph of a running process using information from a trusted dynamic loader. The sandbox component of Lockdown restricts interactions between different shared objects to imported and exported functions by enforcing fine-grained CFI checks. Our prototype implementation shows that dynamic CFI results in low performance overhead.

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether performing resistance training four days per week was superior to two days per week, in promoting strength and neuromuscular adaptations of the leg extensor muscles. Methods: Nine untrained participants (21.4 ± 2.0 years) were pair matched according to gender and leg extensor maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and randomly assigned to either a low frequency group (LFG) or a high frequency group (HFG). MVC, 10-repetition maximum (10 RM), and voluntary muscle activation (VA) were recorded pre and post two weeks of unilateral leg extension resistance training. The interpolated twitch technique was used to estimate VA and surface electromyography data was recorded during MVC. Results: VA and 10 RM increased significantly for both groups. For LFG, VA increased from 84.5% ± 5.0% to 92.5% ± 3.4% (p = 0.003) and for HFG, VA increased from 87.3% ± 2.1% to 95.3% ± 1.3% (p = 0.006). 10 RM increased from 43.2 ± 8.0 kg to 48.2 ± 6.2 kg (p

Abstract: The methods of preparation, conservation and sale of Garba, the traditional Ivorian street meal, abundantly consumed in C?te d’Ivoire, can be exposed to various infections resulting in the poisoning of consumers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hygienic quality of Garba through the analysis and the determination of certain toxic chemicals. In three hundred (300) samples of Garba collected in four districts in Abidjan, toxic metals (cadmium, mercury, lead), biogenic amine (histamine) and mycotoxins (aflatoxins and ochratoxin A) were detected and quantified using official standardized methods. Different toxics analyzed were present at various levels in the Garba. The mercury, lead, cadmium and histamine levels in the Garba were respectively 0.19 mg/kg, 0.19 mg/kg, 0.03 mg/kg and 32.69 mg/kg. The detected mycotoxins included aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 and ochratoxin A, with respective average proportions of 3.44 μg/kg, 1.90 μg/kg, 8.07 μg/kg, 0.56 μg/kg and 0.42 μg/kg. The mycotoxins levels in the Garba are higher than the recommended toxic levels, particularly the ones in aflatoxin B1 and G1. This suggests a sanitary risk associated with the consumption of this meal. Consequently, awareness campaigns and training of the Garba sellers in hygiene and a better regulation of this sector by the competent authorities are required.
Do Food Web Models Reproduce the Structure of Mutualistic Networks?

Abstract: Background Simple models inspired by processes shaping consumer-resource interactions have helped to establish the primary processes underlying the organization of food webs, networks of trophic interactions among species. Because other ecological interactions such as mutualisms between plants and their pollinators and seed dispersers are inherently based in consumer-resource relationships we hypothesize that processes shaping food webs should organize mutualistic relationships as well. Methodology/Principal Findings We used a likelihood-based model selection approach to compare the performance of food web models and that of a model designed for mutualisms, in reproducing the structure of networks depicting mutualistic relationships. Our results show that these food web models are able to reproduce the structure of most of the mutualistic networks and even the simplest among the food web models, the cascade model, often reproduce overall structural properties of real mutualistic networks. Conclusions/Significance Based on our results we hypothesize that processes leading to feeding hierarchy, which is a characteristic shared by all food web models, might be a fundamental aspect in the assembly of mutualisms. These findings suggest that similar underlying ecological processes might be important in organizing different types of interactions.
Uso de Marcadores SSR para Identificación de Germoplasma de Papa en el Programa de Mejoramiento de INIA de Chile

Abstract: molecular markers based on simple sequence repeats (ssr) are a very efficient tool for potato (solanum tuberosum l.) genotype identification and can be very useful for germplasm conservation and management. with the purpose of incorporate this technology into the potato breeding program of the national institute of agricultural research (inia) chile, a set of 26 ssr markers was evaluated on a sample of 71 potato genotypes. each marker was characterized for number and combinations of alleles, scoring quality, polymorphic information content (pic) and discrimination power (d). from the total, only 21 ssr markers showed up scoreable products and the allele number ranged between 2 and 17. the observed allelic combinations among the different potato genotypes ranged from 2 to 47; however, unique genotypes detected by each ssr marker ranged from 0 to 38. the observed (do) and expected (dj) discriminatory power ranged from 0.23 to 0.98 and from 0.43 to 0.92, respectively. the seven ssr markers which showed the highest do scores were stm1009 (0.98), stm1020 (0.97), stm0031 (0.97), stm2013 (0.96), stm1008 (0.94), stm1052 (0.93) and stm0019 (0.91). the stm1009, stm1020 and stm1008 markers are multi-loci ssr, where each one amplifies more than one locus of the potato genome. the utilization of the multi-loci type of marker, or combinations of several ssr markers in either pcr-multiplex or pseudo-multiplex reactions, are good options to increase the speed and reduce the cost of ssr markers application
Detection of immunoglobulin G in the lung and liver of hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis

Abstract: several organs are affected in visceral leishmaniasis, not only those rich in mononuclear phagocytes. hypergammaglobulinemia occurs during visceral leishmaniasis; anti-leishmania antibodies are not primarily important for protection but might be involved in the pathogenesis of tissue lesions. the glomerulonephritis occurring in visceral leishmaniasis has been attributed to immune complex deposition but in other organs the mechanism has not been studied. in the current study we demonstrated the presence of igg in the lung and liver of hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis. hamsters were injected intraperitoneally with 2 x 107 amastigotes of leishmania (leishmania) chagasi and the presence of igg in the liver and lung was evaluated at 7, 15, 30, 45, 80 and 102 days postinfection (pi) by immunohistochemistry. the parasite burden in the spleen and liver increased progressively during infection. we observed a deposit of igg from day 7 pi that increased progressively until it reached highest intensity around 30 and 45 days pi, declining at later times. the igg deposits outlined the sinusoids. in the lung a deposit of igg was observed in the capillary walls that was moderate at day 7 pi, but the intensity increased remarkably at day 30 pi and declined at later times of infection. no significant c3 deposits were observed in the lung or in the liver. we conclude that igg may participate in the pathogenesis of the inflammatory process of the lung and liver occurring in experimental visceral leishmaniasis and we discuss an alternative mechanism other than immune complex deposition.
