The Leucocytozoidae of South African birds. The Coliiformes and Coraciiformes

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The leucocytozoids of the avian orders Coliiformes and Coraciiformes are reviewed. Leuoocytozoon colius of the Coliidae, L. alcedinis and L. dacelo of the Alcedinidae and L. bucerotis of the Bucerotidae are described as new species. Leucocytozoon eurystomi, L. nyctyornis and L. communis of the Coraciidae, Meropidae and Upupidae respectively are redescribed. Leucocytozoon coraciae, L. francae, L. leitaoi and L. melloi are declared synonyms of L. eurystomi. Leucocytozoon apiaster of the Meropidae and L. musajevi of the Coraciidae have previously been declared nomina nuda. ******** AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die leucocytozo ede bloedparasiete van die vo lordes Coliiformes en Coraciiformes word hersien. Leucocytozoon colius van die Coliidae, L. alcedinis en L. dacelo van die Alcedinidae en L. bucerotis van die Bucerotidae word as nuwe spesies beskryf. Randomly rough rectangular-groove surfaces with predetermined backscatter intensities

Abstract: the backscattered intensity of the scattered light in rectangular-grooved surfaces is used as a design parameter for randomly rough surfaces. a modified kirchhoff method and the integral equation method are used to calculate the scattered light distribution for these designed surfaces. the results of the two calculation methods are found to show good agreement, with the kirchhoff method slightly overestimating the double scattered intensity, perhaps due to the limitations of the geometrical shadow functions used in this method. these results show that the backscattered intensity can be controlled in this type of surface.
Determination of the Glycemic Indices of Three Different Cassava Granules (Garri) and the Effect of Fermentation Period on Their Glycemic Responses

Abstract: Three Garri samples (A, B, C) from the same cassava specie (Manihot utillsima) produced at different fermentation time (24, 48 and 72 h) were evaluated for Glycemic Indices (G.I). Oral glucose-D was used as standard food. Proximate analysis including the dietary fibre and glycemic carbohydrate were determined using standard methods. Result showed that dietary fibre decreased with length of fermentation giving values as 15.75, 10.85 and 7.60 for 24, 48 and 72 h respectively. Glycemic carbohydrate increased with length of fermentation giving values as 63.57, 69.11 and 73.05 for 24, 48 and 72 h respectively. Fermentation time affected the glycemic indices of the foods. The G.I values increased from 62, 67 and 73 for 24, 48 and 72 h respectively. Results showed that sample A and B were intermediate GI foods while sample C was a high GI food. The mean glycemic responses of the samples showed significant difference (p>0.05). The co-efficient of variation for the standard food was 26%.
Nutritive and Anti-Nutritive Evaluation of Wonderful Kola (Buccholzia coricea) Seeds

Abstract: Levels of some nutrients, anti-nutrients and dietary fibre of wonderful kola (Buccholzia coricea) seeds were determined using standard analytical methods. Crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, ash, carbohydrate, moisture contents and calorific values were 13.28%, 2.50%, 1.70%, 4.53%, 77.18%, 1.34%, and 384.33% Kcal, respectively. The total, insoluble and soluble dietary fibre contents were found to be 11.77%, 11.09%, and 0.68%, respectively. Elemental analysis of the seeds indicated that the dried seeds contained magnesium (1.58%), sodium (1.20ppm), potassium (1.26ppm), phosphorus (0.18mg/g) and calcium (0.17%). Anti-nutrient composition of saponin, oxalates, tannins and phytates in mg/100g. The values were 4.03±0.26, 1.06±0.04, 0.11±0.004 and 3.18±0.01, respectively, while trypsin inhibitor was 0.53±0.07 TIU. These results reveal that these seeds contain appreciable amounts of nutrients especially carbohydrates and proteins with good caloric value and low levels of toxicants and should be included in human diets to supplement our daily allowance needed by the body.

Abstract: Throughout the ages, the church as one of the institutions in society has played an important role in the moral development of people; both in South Africa and abroad. However, since the recent political revolution in South Africa and the adoption of a new constitution, the state has been shifting into a neutral religious direction, so that no religion is favoured over another. This does not mean that churches have a less important role to play today. In fact, Christian churches still have a significant effect on communities. Therefore they have an even greater responsibility to convey Christian values and principles in order to educate their members in these matters in a dedicated way. For this purpose, the church needs a clear formulation of its moral message, as well as programmes by which to convey this message to its people.

Abstract: This article should be read as a review article in which the forms and causes of a number of moral problems in South Africa are discussed. The purpose of this article is to provide churches with a clear definition of the forms and causes of the moral issues in modern South African society. This article also attempts to offer some assistance in this regard. The argument is approached from a Christian ethical paradigm. In the article it is acknowledged that there are conflicting opinions within the broader Christian paradigm about matters such as what is to be seen as sexual morality. One of the duties of the church is that of moral development; to achieve this, churches have to develop a thorough understanding of moral problems.

Abstract: The universal question so often asked by instructors is how does one choose which medium to use for different parts of a course. The questioner usually expects to be referred to a beautifully constructed algorithm or a carefully balanced analysis of pedagogical factors which will lead to a best choice. No such things exist. Instead choice of media is still very much controlled by logistical financial and internal political factors. 'Gut feeling' is still an important means of selecting media.
Modulation by Insulin of the Co-Localized LDL Receptor in Normal and Type-I Diabetic Subjects  [PDF]

Abstract: Ongoing insulin therapy maintains LDL receptors at highly expressed state in Type-1 diabetic people; yet Type-1 diabetics are liable of having higher plasma LDL level. This disparity has raised doubt on the probability of existence of functionally active LDL receptor in such people. Confocal microscopy and immunoprecipitation have made it evident that a portion of insulin and LDL receptors remain together in a co-localized mode, which only gets freed in presence of insulin. The findings of this study have shown that insulin therapy protects Type-1 diabetic people from the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis by decimating the inactivity of the co-localized LDL receptors in addition to its regular effect of having increased glucose tolerance. The existence of co-localized state of these two receptors and their dependence on insulin for independent activity has, at least, presented a reason for developing hypercholesterolemia and advanced coronary atherosclerotic lesion in chronic Type-1 diabetic subjects.

Abstract: extensive neuronal cell loss is observed in alzheimer's disease. laminin immunoreactivity colocalizes with senile plaques, the characteristic extracellular histopathological lesions of alzheimer brain, which consist of the amyloid ? (a?) peptide polymerized into amyloid fibrils. these lesions have neurotoxic effects and have been proposed to be a main cause of neurodegeneration. in order to understand the pathological significance of the interaction between laminin and amyloid, we investigated the effect of laminin on amyloid structure and toxicity. we found that laminin interacts with the a?1-40 peptide, blocking fibril formation and even inducing depolymerization of preformed fibrils. protofilaments known to be intermediate species of a? fibril formation were also detected as intermediate species of laminin-induced a? fibril depolymerization. moreover, laminin-amyloid interactions inhibited the toxic effects on rat primary hippocampal neurons. as a whole, our results indicate a putative anti-amyloidogenic role of laminin which may be of biological and therapeutic interest for controlling amyloidosis, such as those observed in cerebral angiopathy and alzheimer's disease.
