Potential of Waste Water Use for Jatropha Cultivation in Arid Environments
Arisoa M. Rajaona,Nele Sutterer,Folkard Asch
Agriculture , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/agriculture2040376
Abstract: Water is crucial for socio-economic development and healthy ecosystems. With the actual population growth and in view of future water scarcity, development calls for improved sectorial allocation of groundwater and surface water for domestic, agricultural and industrial use. Instead of intensifying the pressure on water resources, leading to conflicts among users and excessive pressure on the environment, sewage effluents, after pre-treatment, provide an alternative nutrient-rich water source for agriculture in the vicinity of cities. Water scarcity often occurs in arid and semiarid regions affected by droughts and large climate variability and where the choice of crop to be grown is limited by the environmental factors. Jatropha has been introduced as a potential renewable energy resource since it is claimed to be drought resistant and can be grown on marginal sites. Sewage effluents provide a source for water and nutrients for cultivating jatropha, a combined plant production/effluent treatment system. Nevertheless, use of sewage effluents for irrigation in arid climates carries the risk of salinization. Thus, potential irrigation with sewage effluents needs to consider both the water requirement of the crop and those needed for controlling salinity build-up in the top soil. Using data from a case study in Southern Morocco, irrigation requirements were calculated using CROPWAT 8.0. We present here crop evapotranspiration during the growing period, required irrigation, the resulting nutrient input and the related risk of salinization from the irrigation of jatropha with sewage effluent.
Clinical perspectives on the association between respiratory syncytial virus and reactive airway disease
Sigurs Nele
Respiratory Research , 2002, DOI: 10.1186/rr186
Abstract: Asthma is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children worldwide, as is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This report reviews controlled retrospective and prospective studies conducted to investigate whether there is an association between RSV bronchiolitis in infancy and subsequent development of reactive airway disease or allergic sensitization. Findings indicate that such a link to bronchial obstructive symptoms does exist and is strongest for children who experienced severe RSV illness that requires hospitalization. However, it is not yet clear what roles genetic predisposition and environmental or other risk factors may play in the interaction between RSV bronchiolitis and reactive airway disease or allergic sensitization. Randomized, prospective studies utilizing an intervention against RSV, such as a passive immunoprophylactic agent, may determine whether preventing RSV bronchiolitis reduces the incidence of asthma.

Abstract: Erinevate h likute laad meie igap evases k nes varieerub tugevalt, kuid h lduse varieeruvus ei ole enamasti k neeristusele takistuseks. See annab alust oletada, et k netaju on v lja arendanud süsteemi, millega tuvastada foneeme v ga suure varieeruvusega k nesignaalist.

A study of the Gribov-Zwanziger action: from propagators to glueballs
Nele Vandersickel
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: This Ph.D. thesis presents a study of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework: from propagators to glueballs. The chapters 2 and 3 are meant as an introduction and only require a basic knowledge of quantum field theory. Chapter 2 explains the techniques behind algebraic renormalization, which shall be widely used throughout this thesis, while chapter 3 tries to give a pedagogic overview of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework as this is not available yet in the literature. The subsequent chapters contain own research. First in chapter 4, we shall dig a bit deeper in the Gribov-Zwanziger framework, by exploring the BRST symmetry and the KO criterium. Next, in chapter 5 we shall elaborate on the ghost and the gluon propagator in the infrared and present a refined Gribov-Zwanziger action. Further, we present two chapters on the search for physical operators within the (refined) Gribov-Zwanziger framework, chapter 6 and 7. A small chapter 8 is devoted to some values for different glueballs. We end this thesis with the conclusions, chapter 9.
The PreCardio-study protocol – a randomized clinical trial of a multidisciplinary electronic cardiovascular prevention programme

BMC Cardiovascular Disorders , 2007, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2261-7-27
Abstract: In a randomized controlled trial, one group will receive a maximal intervention (= intervention group). The intervention group will be compared to the control group receiving a minimal intervention. An inclusion of 350 patients in total, with a follow-up of 3 years is foreseen. The inclusion criteria are age between 25–65 and insured by the Onderlinge Ziekenkas, insuring for guaranteed income in case of illness for self-employed. The maximal intervention group receives several prevention consultations by their general practitioner (GP) using a new type of cardiovascular risk calculator with personalised feedback on behavioural risk factors. These patients receive a follow-up with intensive support of health behaviour change via different methods, i.e. a tailored website and personal advice of a multidisciplinary team (psychologist, physiotherapist and dietician). The aim of this strategy is to reduce cardiovascular risk factors according to the guidelines. The primary outcome measures will be cardiovascular risk factors. The secondary outcome measures are cardiovascular events, quality of life, costs and incremental cost effectiveness ratios. The control group receives prevention consultations using a new type of cardiovascular risk calculator and general feedback. This trial incorporates interventions by GPs and other health professionals aiming at a reduction of medical and behavioural cardiovascular risk factors. An assessment of clinical, psychological and economical outcome measures will be performed.ISRCTN23940498In Europe, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death (1.5 million deaths per year) and is an important source of disability [1-3]. The incidence of coronary vascular events is 1.91 per 1000 population years [4]. It is proven that prevention of CVD risk factors lead to a reduction of CVD[5,6]. Prevention programmes should include interventions aimed at a reduction of medical risk factors (hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, hyperglycae

Political Problems Facing Governments in Using Scientific Advice, and Legal and Other Problems Facing Scientists when Trying to Give Independent Advice to Governments
Klaus Gottstein,Nele Matz
Physics , 2008,
Abstract: It is the role of the scientific community to provide for the knowledge of scientific facts and technical capabilities as a background for political decision-making. The reasons are given why governments are sometimes not ready to accept well-founded advice. The legal relationship between governments and scientific research are considered. The options available to the scientific community for supplying useful advice to decision-makers and to the public in questions of general concern are delineated.
Planting the Flag in Arctic Waters: Russia’s Claim to the North Pole
Nele Matz-Lück
G?ttingen Journal of International Law , 2009,
Abstract: With its demonstrative setting of a Russian Flag on the seabed in the Arctic Ocean outside the 200 nautical miles limitation of the continental shelf in 2007 the Russian Federation has fuelled discussions on claims concerning the outer continental shelf by Arctic rim-States. Although the planting of the flag on the ocean floor is irrelevant under international law, it reveals a political attitude that may make agreement and co-operation concerning the different demands more difficult. The disputes on the boundaries of the outer continental shelf cannot finally be settled by the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf or by dispute settlement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea but only by agreement amongst the parties themselves.
