Biosynthesis of Copper Nanoparticles and Their Antimicrobial Activity  [PDF]

Abstract:

Development of green nanotechnology is generating interest of researchers toward ecofriendly biosynthesis of nanoparticles. Biomolecules present in plant extracts can be used to reduce metal ions to nanoparticles in a single-step green synthesis process. This biogenic reduction of metal ion to base metal is quite rapid, readily conducted at room temperature and pressure, and easily scaled up. In this study, biosynthesis of stable copper nanoparticles were done using datura meta leaf extract. These biosynthesized Cu nanoparticles? were characterized by UV/Vis-spectroscopy, Particle size analyzer (PSA), Transmission electron mictroscopy (TEM), Energy dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was observed that the datura meta leaf extract can reduce copper ions into copper nanoparticles within 8 to 10 min of reaction time. Thus, this method can be used for rapid and ecofriendly biosynthesis of stable copper nanoparticles.Synthesis mediated by plant extracts is environmentally benign. The reducing agents involved include the various water soluble plant metabolites (e.g. alkaloids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids) and co-enzymes. Extracts of a diverse range of plant species have been successfully used in making nanoparticles. In addition to plant extracts, live plants can be used for the synthesis. It was found that copper nanoparticles were also found to exhibit reasonably good antimicrobial activity when compared with standard Chloramphenicol, which suggests its potential use as antimicrobial agent. Hence, there is scope to develop new methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles which should be required inexpensive reagent, less drastic reaction condition and eco-friendly.?

Abstract: We describe a new phenomenon of zitterbewegung of a free Dirac particle in cosmological spacetimes. Unlike the similar effect theorized by Schrodinger in 1930, the cosmological zitterbewegung is a real, physically attainable effect, which originates from the mixing of positive and negative frequency modes of a field operator in cosmological spacetimes. We briefly discuss the potential for observing this effect in laboratory experiments with trapped ions.
Continuous Selections of the Inverse Numerical Range Map

Abstract: For a complex $n$-by-$n$ matrix $A$, the numerical range $F(A)$ is the range of the map $f_A(x) = x^*A x$ acting on the unit sphere in $\C^n$. We ask whether the multivalued inverse numerical range map $f_A^{-1}$ has a continuous single-valued selection defined on all or part of $F(A)$. We show that for a large class of matrices, $f_A^{-1}$ does have a continuous selection on $F(A)$. For other matrices, $f_A^{-1}$ has a continuous selection defined everywhere on $F(A)$ except in the vicinity of a finite number of exceptional points on the boundary of $F(A)$.

Abstract: Btree and Rtree are two basic index structures; many different variants of them are proposed after them. Different variants are used in specific application for the performance optimization. In this paper different variants of Btree and Rtree are discussed and compared. Index structures are different in terms of structure, query support, data type support and application. Index structures are discussed first. Btree and its variants are discussed and them Rtree and its variants are discussed. Some structures example is also shown for the more clear idea. Then comparison is made between all structure with respect to complexity, query type support, data type support and application.
Alternative therapy in glaucoma management: Is there any role?

Abstract: Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Various randomized controlled clinical trials have shown that lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) does reduce progression of primary open-angle glaucoma. However, there is lots of interest in nonpharmacological options that includes lifestyle adjustment and alternative and complementary therapy (ACT). At least 5% glaucoma population uses ACT. Various lifestyle activities like exercise and alcohol can reduce IOP by 1 to 2 mm Hg but would have small effect on glaucoma. The psychological stress can increase IOP. Hypothetically and few studies do show neuroprotective effect (or effect on ocular blood flow) of alcohol, Gingko biloba, bilberry, but the current evidence is weak for its routine use. We must also remember the side effects of ′medications′ (e.g., marijuana, alcohol) before promoting as remedy for glaucoma. In current armamentarium of glaucoma management, ACT cannot substitute the conventional treatment available to lower IOP.

Abstract: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is a major risk factor for stroke, heart failure, and death. Current treatments focus on anti-coagulation as well as rate-control and rhythm-control strategies. Frequent INR checks associated with warfarin along with several adverse side effects of anti-arrhythmics have propelled investigations into novel treatments for atrial fibrillation. Research is focused not only on pioneering new pharmacological antico- agulation and anti-arrhythmic agents but also on improving surgical techniques in hopes of treating the arrhythmia. Here, we first briefly discuss the current treatment options, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, for atrial fibrillation. We then present a focused review of recent animal and human investigations that examine the use of novel an-ticoagulation agents, mechanisms of new anti-arrhythmics, analyze potential triggers of atrial fibrillation, and highlight the role of genetics in atrial fibrillation.
Structure-Function Elucidation of Antioxidative and Prooxidative Activities of the Polyphenolic Compound Curcumin

Abstract: Phenolic compounds have been very well known for their antioxidant properties, owing to their unique ability to act as free radical scavengers which, in turn, is an outstanding attribute of their unique biochemical structure. Recent accumulating lines of evidence inculcate sustainable interest and curiosity towards the chemoprotective nature of the natural polyphenolic compound curcumin (diferuloylmethane) against oxidative stress-mediated disorders. Curcumin is naturally found as a constituent of dietary spices called turmeric, extracted from the plant Curcuma longa. However, like every phenolic antioxidant, curcumin possesses a concentration and medium dependent anti- and pro-oxidant behaviour. A detailed study of the structure-function analysis and the understanding of the mode of action of curcumin as well as its chemical analogues is thus essential to understand the selective biochemical consequences of curcumin. Moreover, the presence of transition metal ions, route of administration, and localized tissue are also the vital decisive factors to determine curcumin behaviour. With this viewpoint, this paper sheds lights on the medium dependent prooxidative and antioxidative attributes of curcumin. Further, with respect to emergence of nanocarriers, a brief discussion focusing on the biochemical effect exertion of curcumin chiefly due to targeted and slow release has also been added towards the end. 1. Introduction Phenolic compounds are widely accepted and recommended for their antioxidant activities [1–3].The chemical structure of the phenolic compounds imparts them the ability to serve as free radical scavengers. A phenolic compound consists of a benzene ring and an alcoholic hydroxyl group, which are the defining features of its acidic nature. The type of the compound to be reduced, the degree of methoxylation, and the number of the hydroxyl groups present are some of the vital parameters that determine the antioxidant activity of a phenolic antioxidant. A diligent look into the structure of typical alcohol and a phenol leads to the conclusive finding that, in alcohols, the –OH group is bonded to saturated carbon atom while, in case of phenols, the hydroxyl (–OH) group is bonded to an unsaturated carbon atoms and this is clearly an indication that release of hydrogen ion is easier from the phenols than from the corresponding alcohols. That’s why phenols are widely known by the name carbolic acid.
