Abstract: Nowadays soil loss by erosion is one of the most serious environmental problems which has caused the degradation of various resources, especially soil and water. The aim of this study was to predict the soil loss due to erosion at a small watershed sited in Semiarid region of Ceara State, Brazil, through an arrangement of Geographic Information System tools with a quantitative model of soil loss, by the Universal Soil Loss Equation, USLE. The watershed delimitation was performed using the Digital Elevation Model. The density of drainage network was estimated using the extension ArcHydro/ArcMap 9.1. The soil loss in 74% of the studied small watershed presents a value smaller than 11 t ha-1 year-1 in more plain and vegetated areas. It was observe that more than 90% of the area presented a soil loss below 37 t ha-1 year-1, being this characteristic very influenced by the local geography, which is smooth and low sloped in more than 83% of the area of the small watershed. 66% of the area presents a low vulnerability to erosion (<10 t ha-1 year-1), being associated to this region cover vegetation and low values of slope factors. The integrated use of GIS and USLE has allowed a fast and dynamic analysis of the study area, beyond identifying most vulnerable areas to the soil loss process within the basin.
Desempenho dos Sistemas de Irriga o na Cultura da Banana no Perímetro Irrigado Baixo Acaraú, Ceará

Abstract: Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o desempenho dos sistemas de irriga o na cultura da banana do Perímetro Irrigado Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. As avalia es foram realizadas em oito lotes, em julho de 2007. As vaz es foram coletadas em quatro pontos ao longo da linha lateral, ou seja, do primeiro emissor, dos emissores situados a 1/3 e 2/3 do comprimento e do último emissor. As linhas laterais foram avaliadas da mesma forma ao longo da linha de deriva o. Com esses valores foram determinados os seguintes coeficientes: Uniformidade de Christiansen - CUC, Uniformidade de Distribui o – CUD, Eficiência de Aplica o e as varia es de press o e vaz o ao longo das linhas laterais. Apenas o lote C, apresentou em todas as linhas avaliadas, uma varia o na vaz o inferior ao limite máximo recomendado. Para a varia o de press o ao longo das linhas laterais, os lotes A, C, F e H ficaram abaixo do limite máximo recomendado. O CUC variou de 49 a 98% para os lotes B e C, respectivamente. Foram considerados como excelentes 50% dos lotes avaliados enquanto50% apresentaram funcionamento inadequado em rela o ao CUC. Em rela o ao CUD, 37,5% foram classificados como ruins; e 12,5% apresentaram-se regulares. Uma eficiência de aplica o inaceitável foi constatada em 62,5% dos lotes. Os sistemas de irriga o funcionavam com baixo desempenho da uniformidade de distribui o (50%) e baixa eficiência de aplica o da água (62,5%). Os produtores têm necessidade de palestras, de cursos práticos e da a o da extens o rural, de modo que possam aprender as técnicasadequadas do manejo da irriga o.

Abstract: toca dos urubus is located in baependi municipality, minas gerais state, and belong the alto rio grande region. the vegetation comprised a mosaic with cerrado, rocky grassland and seasonally dry tropical forest. a floristic survey was undertaking, restrict to vascular plants, and a descriptive characterization of vegetation is presented. a total of 403 species distributed in 260 genus and 77 families were sampled. angiosperms comprised 395 species, while pteridophytes comprised eight species. the richest families were asteraceae (66 spp.), poaceae (52 spp.), fabaceae (32 spp.), cyperaceae (19 spp.), melastomataceae and rubiaceae (16 spp.). most of the species (322 spp.) occur on cerrado, while 247 occur on rocky grassland, and 71 species on seasonally dry tropical forest. despite the small area studied, approximately 25 ha, high species diversity was found, and 10 of these are included at the red list of minas gerais, strengthening the need for conservation planning within the region.

Abstract: high-throughput screening (hts) and virtual screening (vs) are useful methods employed in drug discovery, allowing the identification of promising hits for lead optimization. the efficiency of these approaches depends on a number of factors, such as the organization of high quality databases of compounds and the parameterization of essential components of the screen process. this brief review presents the basic principles of the hts and vs methods, as well as a perspective of the utility and integration of these drug design approaches, highlighting current opportunities and future challenges in medicinal chemistry.

Abstract: The essential oils from Mentha piperita, Cymbopogon citratus, Rosmarinus officinalis, Peumus boldus and Foeniculum vulgare were extracted by hydrodistillation and characterized and quantified by GC-MS and GC-DIC. The oils induced hemolysis with all the doses evaluated (0.6 to 1.8 μL), and the diameters of the halos varied between 9 and 15 mm. Pre-incubation of P. boldus oil with Bothrops jararacussu venom resulted in potentiation of venom-induced hemolysis (30%) (proteases and phospholipases A2). The essential oil from M. piperita (0.6 μL) inhibited venom-induced hemolysis by 45%, whereas 0.6

Abstract: The objective of the research was to evaluate the effects of saline stress on the initial growth and physiological parameters of three varieties of cotton plants, being two cultivars of colored fiber (BRS Topázio and BRS Verde) and one of white fiber (BRS 286). The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions. After chemical depletion with sulfuric acid, five seeds were seeded in polyethylene pots of 20 kg, leaving only one plant per pot after thinning. The experimental design was completely randomized, with a factorial scheme of 3 × 5, with five replications, totaling 75 plots, being three cotton varieties and five saline stress treatments—1.1; 3.1; 5.1; 7.1; 9.1 dS m?1. The evaluations occurred at 15 and 30 days after the beginning of the treatments (DAT) for growth variables (plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and leaf area) and gas exchange (stomatal conductance, net photosynthesis rate and transpiration. The variety that was most resistant to the salt stress levels studied was BRS 286, followed by BRS Topazio and BRS Verde.
UPLC-QTOF-MS Analysis of Extracts from the Leaves of Pouteria caimito (Sapotaceae) and Their Antioxidant Activity  [PDF]

Abstract: This study describes the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of an extract from the leaves of Pouteria caimito (Sapotaceae). The extract in ethanol was obtained by maceration at room temperature and subjected to the liquid-liquid partition to obtain fractions in hexane and ethyl acetate. Steroids, triterpenes, saponins, alkaloids and flavonoids were identified by the phytochemical prospection of extracts and fractions from the leaves. The analysis of the ethyl acetate fraction by UPLC-QTOF-MS allowed us to identify eight triterpenes, namely, euscaphic acid (1), hyptadienic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), oleanolic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)- alphitolic acid (6), 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)-maslinic acid (7) and 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)-2-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (8). The ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction presented total phenolic contents of 10.6 ± 0.1 and 11.4 ± 0.3 mg GAE g-1, respectively, and considerable antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay with EC50 values of 299.4 ± 1.5 and 391.8 ± 0.9 μg·ml-1, respectively.

Abstract: the present review discusses the latest advances in biosensor technology achieved by the assembly of biomolecules associated with gold nanoparticles in analytical devices. this review is divided in sections according to the biomolecule employed in the biosensor development: (i) immunocompounds; (ii) dna/rna and functional dna/rna; and (iii) enzymes and heme proteins. in order to facilitate the comprehension each section was subdivided according to the transduction mode. gold nanoparticles based immunosensors have a wide range of applications in food, environmental, pharmaceutical, chemistry and clinical diagnostics. the nanoparticles were employed to improve whether the analytical signal or the immunocompounds immobilization. in another section, biosensors based on dna/rna biomolecules employing gold nanostructures as labels and label-free funtional dna/rna biosensors associated to gold nanostructures as tranducers were systematically reported for rapid identification of pathogens, species of environmental interest and clinical diagnostics, respectively. the inclusion of gold nanoparticles in modified electrodes itself enhances the electron transfer between the transducer and biomolecules leading to improved bioanalytical devices when redox enzymes and heme proteins are used. biosensors for the detection and quantification of glucose and hydrogen peroxide are discussed as well.
A map of Brazilian dental research in the last decade

Abstract: the aim of the present study was to analyze dental research trends in brazil over the past nine years. all abstracts presented at the 26th annual meeting of the brazilian society for dental research in 2009 (n = 2648) were classified based on field of knowledge, home institution and geographic region. data were compared with those previously published based on abstracts presented at various meetings. between 2001 and 2006, five fields of knowledge had a greater than 10% representation among the total number of studies. these fields included restorative dentistry/dental materials (rd/dm), periodontics, endodontics, pediatric dentistry and population-based oral health. in 2009, only rd/dm maintained a greater than 10% proportion of meeting abstracts, and basic fields comprised the second position among those fields with greater representation (9.8%). the majority of research studies were performed at public institutions, and the number of abstracts per state increased significantly in 2009 (wilcoxon test, p < 0.001). the southeastern region of brazil submitted the greatest number of abstracts; however, other regions also demonstrated increased participation in research (11%). the percentage distribution of abstracts between states remained constant (wilcoxon test, p = 0.255; rs = 0.873). the results of the present study suggest a slight shift in the scientific research profile in brazilian dentistry: fields related to professional disciplines have declined in relative research participation, while increasing interest has been observed in basic fields and new specialties.
In vitro study on thiabendazole action on viability of Ascaris lumbricoides (Lineu, 1758) eggs

Abstract: the in vitro activity of thiabendazole on ascaris lumbricoides eggs, which were recovered from uteri of worm excreted after chemotherapeutic treatment, was studied. four concentrations of the drug were used: 1 ? 2.5 ? 5 ? and 10 ppm during 24, 48 and 72 hours of exposure. subsequently, the eggs were centrifuged, washed three times and h2so4 0.1n was added. the eggs were maintained in an incubator for 20 days at 28°c. finally, the percentage of embryonated eggs was determined under a lightmicroscope at a 100x magnification. after 48 and 72 hours of thiabendazole exposure, at a concentration of 10ppm, the drug showed complete inhibition of egg embryonation.
