Sample Size Requirements for Assessing Statistical Moments of Simulated Crop Yield Distributions
Niklaus Lehmann,Robert Finger,Tommy Klein,Pierluigi Calanca
Agriculture , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/agriculture3020210
Abstract: Mechanistic crop growth models are becoming increasingly important in agricultural research and are extensively used in climate change impact assessments. In such studies, statistics of crop yields are usually evaluated without the explicit consideration of sample size requirements. The purpose of this paper was to identify minimum sample sizes for the estimation of average, standard deviation and skewness of maize and winterwheat yields based on simulations carried out under a range of climate and soil conditions. Our results indicate that 15 years of simulated crop yields are sufficient to estimate average crop yields with a relative error of less than 10% at 95% confidence. Regarding standard deviation and skewness, sample size requirements depend on the degree of symmetry of the underlying population’s distribution. For symmetric distributions, samples of 200 and 1500 yield observations are needed to estimate the crop yields’ standard deviation and skewness coefficient, respectively. Higher degrees of asymmetry increase the sample size requirements relative to the estimation of the standard deviation, while at the same time the sample size requirements relative to the skewness coefficient are decreased.
Technological Perspectives in Phylogeny Research: Revisiting Comparative Analysis of Complete Mitochondrial Genomes for Time-Extended Lineages  [PDF]
Tommy Rodriguez
Advances in Bioscience and Biotechnology (ABB) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/abb.2014.55057
Abstract:

This article seeks to emphasize a simplified approach to phylogeny research using complete mitochondrial genomes alone, while touching upon a number of technological perspectives, such as algorithmic selection, which can help improve accuracy and performance in comparative analysis. My results will show that reliable estimations can be obtained by using mitochondrial markers, even among time-extended taxonomical rankings. Six distinct mammalian groups of taxa were selected for comparison. In all cases, mtDNA models generated reliable phylogeny approximations when compared against other independent data, while rendering exceptional computational performance.

Indonesian Students’ Representation on Psychology and Social Change: Challenge for Curriculum Progression  [PDF]
Juneman Abraham, Tommy Prayoga
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2017.58010
Abstract: As a science, psychology experiences paradoxical condition. There is indeed a recognition that its applications in the educational, clinical, and industrial fields have proliferated extensively in Indonesia. However, there are criticisms that 1) psychology mimics natural science epistemology, 2) the identity of Indonesian Psychology is still in the “status quo”, 3) its role in designing social change is minimal (e.g. “Mental Revolution” movement in Indonesia is considered to be more influenced by Sociology rather than Psychology proponents), 4) psychology tends to prioritize the well-being of the elite (socially-economically) of society, not the poorest. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach to explore the social representation on the perceptions of university students about the contribution of psychology in inspiring them to create social change. Participants of this study were 104 Psychology students (28 males, 76 females; 101 undergraduate, 3 graduate students) in Jakarta, Banten, Westand Central Java, Indonesia. We asked them a) the reason for choosing Psychology study program, b) the meaning of social change, c) the psychological courses associated with social change, d) the social problems urgent to be managed by psychology, and e) what their own plans are in making the change. Generality and uniqueness of the participants’ answers will be discussed so as to generate suggestions for psychology curriculum development that is more contextual, innovative, and empowering in Indonesia.

Searches for hyperbolic extra dimensions at the LHC
Ohlsson, Tommy
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2008,
Abstract: In this poster, we present a model of large extra dimensions where the internal space has the geometry of a hyperbolic disc. Compared with the ADD model, this model provides a more satisfactory solution to the hierarchy problem between the electroweak scale and the Planck scale, and it also avoids constraints from astrophysics. Since there is no known analytic form of the Kaluza-Klein spectrum for our choice of geometry, we obtain a spectrum based on a combination of approximations and numerical computations. We study the possible signatures of our model for hadron colliders, especially the LHC, where the most important processes are the production of a graviton together with a hadronic jet or a photon. We find that for the case of hadronic jet production, it is possible to obtain relatively strong signals, while for the case of photon production, this is much more difficult.
”Kan verka skr mmande p sm barn.” V ld, sex och historiebruk i tv-serien Tr larna
Tommy Gustafsson
Barnboken : Tidskrift f?r Barnlitteraturforskning , 2012, DOI: 10.3402/clr.v35i0.19964
Abstract: This article examines the television adaption and reception of Swedish youth novelist Sven Wernstr m's series of historical youth novels called Tr larna (“The Thralls”) in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The book series as well as the Danish animated televisions series used a noticeable class perspective in order to make comparisons between the condition of slaves in medieval times and Swedish working class of the 19th and 20th centuries. In accordance with the novels, the television series therefore displays a strong moral historical perspective. The analysis in the article focuses mainly on the abundant use of violence and sex as political and pedagogical instruments to promote class consciousness among its child viewers. In contrast to the novels, the television series was able to create more explicit audiovisual images of violence and sex that, in fact, were censored by Swedish state television before it was aired on a child friendly timeslot. Although some scenes in the television series were censored, the final analysis reveals that “The Thralls” can be seen as a rather typical example of the politically and aesthetically radical Swedish children's culture of the 1970's.

Unitary gauge considered harmful

Abstract: I informally review the Higgs mechanism, focusing on fundamental aspects which should be common knowledge but apparently are not, explain why your understanding of gauge symmetry breaking is a decreasing function of your reliance on the unitary gauge, and discuss some implications for cosmology (domains, dark energy, CMB cold spot).
Photometric redshift using the far-infrared SED
Tommy Wiklind
Physics , 2003,
Abstract: A method for using the sub-millimeter band to determine photometric redshifts of luminous high-z dusty galaxies is presented. It is based on the observation that local ultra-luminous IR galaxies show an average spectral energy distribution which has a remarkably small dispersion for wavelengths >50 microns. The shape of the long wavelength part is independent on whether the local ULIRG possesses an AGN or not. A local template is derived from a sample of ULIRG data presented by Klaas et al. (2001). Using this template and the internal dispersion in its shape, it is shown that observations at two fixed submm wavelengths can be used to determine the photometric redshift of galaxies in the redshift range 1
Confinement of spin-orbit induced Dirac states in quantum point contacts
Tommy Li
Physics , 2015, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.92.085302
Abstract: The quantum transmission problem for a particle moving in a quantum point contact in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit interaction and applied magnetic field is solved semiclassically. A strong Rashba interaction and parallel magnetic field form emergent Dirac states at the center of the constriction, leading to the appearance of resonances which carry spin current and become bound at high magnetic fields. These states can be controlled in situ by modulation of external electric and magnetic fields, and can be used to turn the channel into a spin pump which operates at zero bias. It is shown that this effect is currently experimentally accessible in $p$-type quantum point contacts.
