Abstract: The market must be defended (also) against the countrymen’s offenses, minimizing the costs involved and this minimization requires as a precondition the most precise possible predetermination of the offenses. The more effective regulatory device in preventing wrongs seems the threat of sanctions in excess of the redress, entrusting the decision on their application to the injured party, who should at the same time be the only entitled to reap the benefit, without distinctions between crimes and civil wrongs. The credibility of the threat, as well as any actual restauration of the harm and the prevention of reiteration, requires accuracy, speed and effectiveness in the application of sanctions and therefore: 1) the parties should have the duty to tell the truth and the instruments for finding the facts should be strengthened; 2) the judges’ mistakes should be sanctioned as well; 3) the jurisdiction should be drawn so as to favor a rapid application of sanctions against an incontrovertible finding of the facts; 4) any form of penalties’ remission should be subject to the consent of the injured party.

Abstract: Backgrounds: In Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) a multi factorial effort limitation becomes pro- gressively relevant as the disease progresses in the consecutive stages. It is measured by both six minutes walking test (6MWT) and maximal cardiopulmonary incremental test (CPET). Aim: It is important to assess in each stage of dis-ease the metabolic load during 6MWT referring to the outcome of CPET and to ascertain whether there is a significant rela- tionship between the measures obtained by CPET and 6MWT. Methods: Four group of fifteen patients affected by COPD in stage I to IV underwent 6MWT and maximal CPET in the same day and results were compared to a group of healthy people. Airflow obstruction was measured by whole body plethysmography, blood gases by gas analysis, maxi- mal oxygen consumption and metabolic parameters by ergometer, lactic acid levels by analyzer. Results: Maximal oxygen consumption (V’O2max) and 6MWT are progressively impaired and related (V’O2max = 1.25 ? 0.26, 1.152 ? 0.4, 1.03 ? 0.44, .85 ? 0.2 l/m; 6MWD = 452 ? 84, 446 ? 82, 381 ? 165, 200 ? 100 respectively in GOLD I to IV stage). Oxygen consumption (V’O2) during 6MWT becomes stable after 3 - 4 minutes and reached at the end of the test close to those measured at de-compensated metabolic acidosis anaerobic threshold (TDMA) (85 ± 0.4 l/m vs. 9 ? 0.4 l/m) in stage I to III, while in COPD there is no difference between V’O2max and V’O2 during 6MWT (0.85 ? 0.2 vs. 0.8 ? 0.23 l/m). 6MWT is more suitable to determine oxygen desaturation than CPET (dSaO2 ?4 ± 2% vs. ?2 ± 1%). 6MWD, the workload performed in 6MWT and V’O2max are significantly related. Conclusion: 6MWT looks as a suitable sub maximal test related CPET. Metabolic requirements under 6MWT are close to TDMA and are obtained in a suitable, self paced, usual exercise, close to everyday experience and thus related to activity daily levels. As the disease worsens the differences between V’O2 during 6MWT and V’O2max wane.

Abstract: In this paper, the problem of maintenance task scheduling is tackled with a twofold objective: meeting the performance criteria of a company and taking into account some operators’ requirements. The production manager makes sure that makespan is optimised while developing operators’ flexibility. The use of skill matrixes enables him to make pairs and to develop training in order to make trainees more autonomous. Operators’ requirements are in particular related to periods of unavailability and their wishes relating to their tasks. Given the complexity of the problem, an exact solution isn’t conceivable and our research focuses on a metaheuritic method giving us a solution that is considered satisfactory. A multi-criteria analysis of the results is performed in order to reach a compromise among conflicting goals.

Abstract:
Images collected by optical and radar satellite sensors represent a most viable solution for the extraction of biophysical parameters of the earth surface. The mid-resolution dataset acquired by Landsat and Sentinel satellites have recently become available free of charge for all users. At the same time, some software for image processing and GIS, like QGIS, R, and ImageJ, have reached a high level of maturity and a large community of users, thanks to their open source license. In this project, free satellite images and open source software have been used for the assessment of the grassland biomass. The overall goal is the enhancement of the statistics of grassland production and dried fodder for the animal breeding. Currently, the National Institute of Statistics collects this kind of dataset at the province level. The project consists in some “in situ” surveys in a specific site in central Italy and in the building of a regression model between the grassland heights and the corresponding radiometric values of the most relevant image bands.

Abstract: The gut contents of fish in three Posidonia oceanica meadows off the island of Ischia (Bay of Naples, Italy) were investigated. A total of 926 individual fish belonging to 28 species was sampled by bottom trawl in the leaf canopy. Labridae, Pomacentridae, Scorpaenidae, and Serranidae were the best represented families (41%, 38%, 8% and 6% of the total number of individuals, respectively). Of the 94 taxa detected in the gut contents, 42 were identified to the species level. The most common food items were decapod crustaceans (15% of the gut contents, on average), copepods (13%), amphipods (14%), brown fragments of P. oceanica (6%), and ostracods (6%). The most abundant species of labridae, Symphodus ocellatus and S. rostratus, showed a broad spectrum of prey. This generalist feeding may positively influence their numerical abundance. Seasonal variations in the diets of fish, also at prey-species level, were demonstrated. The fish taxon plays essentially a macro-carnivore trophic role. In the investigated seagrass meadows the main trophic fluxes start from plant detritus, macrophyta, and microphyta (as primary producers) towards crustacean decapods, copepods, ostracods, and gammarid amphipods (as secondary producers) to fish. A low recycling rate (4%) within the fish community was observed. Larger fish predators (e.g., Sparidae), swimming over the leaf canopy, are the main exporters to adjacent coastal systems.
Joint RANS/LES Modeling of Flameless Combustion  [PDF]

Abstract: We present our timesaving joint RANS/LES approach (we originally developed it for numerical simulations of turbulent premixed combustion) to simulate flameless combustion with separate injection of gas fuel and strong exhaust gas recirculation. It is based on successive RANS/LES numerical modeling where part of the information (stationary average fields) is achieved by RANS simulations and part (instantaneous nonstationary image of the process) by LES. The latter is performed using the RANS field of mean dissipation rate to model the sub-grid turbulent viscosity in the context of the Kolmogorov theory of small-scale turbulence. We analyze flameless combustion in the FLOX? combustor where we also simulate non-premixed flame combustion used for preliminary heating of the combustor. Different regimes take place using different systems of air injection. We applied for both regimes the simple assumption of “mixed is burnt”. The main results are the following: 1) RANS simulations demonstrate for used two injection systems respectively more compact flame and distributed flameless combustion. 2)There is agreement between RANS and corresponding LES results: RANS and averaged LES profiles of the velocity and temperature are in reasonable agreement. 3) LES modeling with Kolmogorov independent on time sub-grid viscosity reproduce instantaneous image of the process including the vortex structures. Probably due to using an annular injector system for air the instantaneous field of the temperature demonstrate significant irregularity in the beginning of the burner, which in an animation looks like moving coherent structures. 4) In the joint RANS/LES approach the computer time of the LES sub-problems is much shorter than classic LES modeling due to using time independent subgrid transport coefficients and avoiding long-continued simulations, which are necessary for averaging of instantaneous LES fields. Practically in our simulations time consuming of the LES sub-problem was only several times lager then the RANS one and it makes this approach suitable for industrial applications.

Symmetry-Break in Voronoi Tessellations

Abstract: We analyse in a common framework the properties of the Voronoi tessellations resulting from regular 2D and 3D crystals and those of tessellations generated by Poisson distributions of points, thus joining on symmetry breaking processes and the approach to uniform random distributions of seeds. We perturb crystalline structures in 2D and 3D with a spatial Gaussian noise whose adimensional strength is α and analyse the statistical properties of the cells of the resulting Voronoi tessellations using an ensemble approach. In 2D we consider triangular, square and hexagonal regular lattices, resulting into hexagonal, square and triangular tessellations, respectively. In 3D we consider the simple cubic (SC), body-centred cubic (BCC), and face-centred cubic (FCC) crystals, whose corresponding Voronoi cells are the cube, the truncated octahedron, and the rhombic dodecahedron, respectively. In 2D, for all values α>0, hexagons constitute the most common class of cells. Noise destroys the triangular and square tessellations, which are structurally unstable, as their topological properties are discontinuous in α=0. On the contrary, the honeycomb hexagonal tessellation is topologically stable and, experimentally, all Voronoi cells are hexagonal for small but finite noise with α<0.12. Basically, the same happens in the 3D case, where only the tessellation of the BCC crystal is topologically stable even against noise of small but finite intensity. In both 2D and 3D cases, already for a moderate amount of Gaussian noise (α>0.5), memory of the specific initial unperturbed state is lost, because the statistical properties of the three perturbed regular tessellations are indistinguishable. When α>2, results converge to those of Poisson-Voronoi tessellations. In 2D, while the isoperimetric ratio increases with noise for the perturbed hexagonal tessellation, for the perturbed triangular and square tessellations it is optimised for specific value of noise intensity. The same applies in 3D, where noise degrades the isoperimetric ratio for perturbed FCC and BCC lattices, whereas the opposite holds for perturbed SCC lattices. This allows for formulating a weaker form of the Kelvin conjecture. By analysing jointly the statistical properties of the area and of the volume of the cells, we discover that also the cells shape heavily fluctuates when noise is introduced in the system. In 2D, the geometrical properties of n-sided cells change with α until the Poisson-Voronoi limit is reached for α>2; in this limit the Desch law for perimeters is shown to be not valid and a square root dependence on n is established, which agrees with exact asymptotic results. Anomalous scaling relations are observed between the perimeter and the area in the 2D and between the areas and the volumes of the cells in 3D: except for the hexagonal (2D) and FCC structure (3D), this applies also for infinitesimal noise. In the Poisson-Voronoi limit, the anomalous exponent is about 0.17 in both the 2D and 3D case. A positive anomaly in the scaling indicates that large cells preferentially feature large isoperimetric quotients. As the number of faces is strongly correlated with the sphericity (cells with more faces are bulkier), in 3D it is shown that the anomalous scaling is heavily reduced when we perform power law fits separately on cells with a specific number of faces.
