The occurrence of metazoan endoparasites of Schilbe intermedius Rüppell, 1832 from the Nwanedi-Luphephe Dams of the Limpopo River System, South Africa
W.J. Smit,Wilmien Luus-Powell
African Zoology , 2012,
Abstract: The present study deals with the survey of endoparasites from Schilbe intermedius (Silver catfish) at the Nwanedi-Luphephe Dams from July 2009 to May 2010. The hosts (n = 60) were collected using gill nets and examined for endoparasites. The following parasites were recorded: three species of trematodes, i.e., Clinostomum metacercariae in the body cavity (prevalence 40%), an unidentified adult digenean in the small intestine (prevalence 33.3%) and Diplostomum metacercariae from the eye (prevalence 1.7%); two species of nematodes, i.e., Contracaecum larvae in the body cavity (prevalence 95%) and Paracamallanus cyathopharynx from the intestine (prevalence 63.3%). None of the fish examined during this study were in a notably poor state of health due to parasitism. Correlations between endoparasite infection and host size, as well as seasonal variation in their infection dynamics associated with environmental changes, were detected.
Taxanes for the Treatment of Metastatic Breast Cancer
W.J. Gradishar
Breast Cancer: Basic and Clinical Research , 2012, DOI: 10.4137/BCBCR.S8205
Abstract: Taxanes have remained a cornerstone of breast cancer treatment over the past three decades, improving the lives of patients with both early- and late-stage disease. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current role of taxanes, including an albumin-bound formulation that enhances delivery of paclitaxel to tumors, in the management of metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Since the introduction of Cremophor EL-paclitaxel to the clinic in the mid-1990s, a substantial amount of investigation has gone into subjects such as formulation, dose, schedule, and taxane resistance, allowing physicians greater flexibility in treating patients with MBC. This review will also examine how the shrinking pool of taxane-naive patients, a result of the expansion of taxanes into the neoadjuvant and adjuvant settings, will respond to taxane retreatment for metastatic disease. Taxane treatment seems likely to continue to play an important role in the treatment of MBC.
Connected leadership: Jeremiah 8:18-9:3 – a case study
W.J. Wessels
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 2010, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v75i3.93
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to address the matter of connected leadership. The point of departure is a biblical passage from Jeremiah 8:18-9:3. The focus of this article is confined to the aspect of connectedness and related issues. The argument put forward is that the rhetorical nature of texts has the ability to engage many readers over time and generations. Not only did the poetic nature of Jeremiah 8:18-9:3 convey the words once spoken by a prophet, but the rhetoric also conveyed the passion of the prophet and of Yahweh for the wounded and broken people of Judah. Added to that is the fact that within the Christian tradition the belief is that the text will find meaning in new contexts as well. Jeremiah 8:18-9:3 brings to the table an element that leaders – especially religious and Christian leaders – need to take note of. Leaders should answer to a “higher power” and to ethical norms because of connectedness to this ‘‘higher power”. As a leader, Jeremiah identified with his people and their woeful condition. But because of his connectedness to Yahweh, he was willing to confront them and point out their wrongdoings. He was not prepared to sacrifice his beliefs and convictions for the sake of popularity.
A semi-quantitative RT-PCR method to measure the in vivo effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acid on porcine muscle PPAR gene expression
Meadus W.J.
Biological Procedures Online , 2003, DOI: 10.1251/bpo43
Abstract: Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) can activate (in vitro) the nuclear transcription factors known as the peroxisome proliferators activated receptors (PPAR). CLA was fed at 11 g CLA/kg of feed for 45d to castrated male pigs (barrows) to better understand long term effects of PPAR activation in vivo. The barrows fed CLA had lean muscle increased by 3.5% and overall fat reduced by 9.2% but intramuscular fat (IMF %) was increased by 14% (P < 0.05). To measure the effect of long term feeding of CLA on porcine muscle gene expression, a semi-quantitative RT-PCR method was developed using cDNA normalized against the housekeeping genes cyclophilin and &bgr;-actin. This method does not require radioactivity or expensive PCR instruments with real-time fluorescent detection. PPAR&ggr; and the PPAR responsive gene AFABP but not PPAR&agr; were significantly increased (P < 0.05) in the CLA fed pig’s muscle. PPAR&agr; and PPAR&ggr; were also quantitatively tested for large differences in gene expression by western blot analysis but no significant difference was detected at this level. Although large differences in gene expression of the PPAR transcriptional factors could not be confirmed by western blotting techniques. The increased expression of AFABP gene, which is responsive to PPAR transcriptional factors, confirmed that dietary CLA can induce a detectable increase in basal PPAR transcriptional activity in the live animal.
Die nabyheid van die Koninkryk
W.J. Snyman
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 1963, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v31i3.1464
Auzoux

Tijdschrift voor de Geschiedenis der Geneeskunde, Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Techniek , 1981,
Abstract: The "Anatomie Clastique" of Dr. L.T.J. Auzoux After the 16 th century the use of drawings and engravings in anatomical teaching was no longer satisfying. There was a need for three dimensional models. This need was enhanced by the lack of sufficient dissection material. Initially three dimensional models were made of wax. However this material has some disadvantages: models made of wax are britle and cannot be touched. Louis Thomas Jerome Auzoux used a paper paste which easily could be moulded and when hardened it was solid, light and unbreakable. He demonstrated his first model in 1822 in the Academic de Médecine. Using papier mache was not an original idea. Jean Francois Ameline claimed priority. Auzoux called his models "Anatomie Clastique" expressing the ability that the model could be taken in pieces and reassembled. A complete model of a human body consisted of 130 numbered parts. The numbers refer to a printed key, the "Tableau Synoptique". Apart from human models Auzoux manufactured also animals. Both types of models weic widely spread in the Netherlands, not only in the Universities but also in the "Clinical Schools".
Microscopische preparaten van de praktizerend geneesheer G.J. Luchtmans

Tijdschrift voor de Geschiedenis der Geneeskunde, Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Techniek , 1983,
Abstract: Microscopic specimens of the general practitioner G.J. Luchtmans In the second half of the 19th century some microscopic research was done by people outside the universities. One of them, G.J. Luchtmans (1808-1868), a general practitioner from Zutphen, was interested in the microscopical structure of the nervous system. He developed modifications of contemporary methods of fixation and staining of tissues. He managed to get excellent specimens using the microtome, designed by J.A. Boogaard, professor of anatomy at Leiden from 1866-1877.
Enkele aspecten uit de ontwikkeling van het verloskundig instrumentarium

Tijdschrift voor de Geschiedenis der Geneeskunde, Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Techniek , 1987,
Abstract: Some aspects of the development of obstetrical instruments The improvement of obstetrical instruments is greatly influenced by mechanical-technical possibilities. Particularly instruments such as levers and forceps, which are exposed to relatively high forces, should be made of hard and tough metals. For that reason the introduction of Sheffield-steel was very important. It offered the possibility to develop a great variety of forceps, including cranioclasts. In addition, for simple obstetric forceps one should also take into account the weight and the mechanical properties of the instrument. The latter depend on the length of the instrument and the position of the centre of rotation. Favourable terms - the least possible compression of the skull during traction - imply that the length of the handles is short in comparison with the length of the blades. Data concerning these factors are derived from the collection of the medical faculty at Leiden, comprising 117 obstetrical forceps. Indeed, 62 instruments belong to the favourable weight classes of 501-750 grams. The ratio in length between handles and blades shows a value of 0,60-0,80 in 36 instruments. From a mechanical point of view the Audibert forceps is very unfavourable, whereas two small-sized variants of the Naegele forceps have extremely low ratios and low weights.
